Herbicide Free Committee
In 1999 a Sandburg/DCS parent noticed the district was using 60 gallons of herbicides on our school grounds. So began our herbicide free program.

Carl Sandburg/DCS is an Herbicide-Free school!

What does that mean?
This means our grounds are kept free of weeds without herbicides, therefore keeping our campus free of potentially dangerous chemicals.

How does the program work?
Volunteers weed, spread mulch and plant plants on the grounds. Families can either adopt a patch of the grounds and maintain it throughout the year or help out on designated work party days.

When do you weed?
The 2011-12 Weed Meet schedule is as follows:

   Wednesdays from 1 p.m.–3 p.m.

  • October 12
  • January TBD
  • February TBD
  • March 14
  • April 11
  • May 9

   Sundays from 11 a.m.–1 p.m.

  • September 25
  • October 30
  • January TBD
  • February TBD
  • March 25
  • April 29
  • May 20
  • June 10
What do we bring?
  • Water
  • Snacks (as needed)

  • Garden gloves
  • Buckets
  • Weeding tools
Can the kids help?
Yes! Bring the kids to help weed or pick up litter on school grounds

Is the playground supervised?
No, the playground is NOT supervised.

Access to Bathrooms?
There is NO building (including restroom and water fountain) access

Weed Event Schedules Don't Work for Me

I can't attend a weeding event, but I would still like to help - how can I help out?
If you can't attend weeding events and would like to help, please consider "adopting" a small section to maintain on your own time.

 Keeping Chemicals Out

If our school was not herbicide free, the district would apply the following chemicals to maintain the school grounds:

Casaron (toxic to nasal tissue and reproductive system)
Snapshot TG (kidney, liver, and reproductive toxicity; carcinogen)
Surflan (kidney and liver damage, birth defects)
Round Up Pro (genetic damage; carninogen)

(Side effects information from the Washington Toxics Coalition. Also see www.beyondpesticides.org and www.pesticide.org.)

 Sandburg/DCS Parents

"Love the idea of keeping chemicals away from our children and promoting green choices with quantifiable results. These wor weekends promote a community of caring Sandburg/DCS families, and we always have a great time participating."

"The pride in seeing the school on Monday after the weed-pull pulls me back time and time again. When you see the school on Monday, when the tools are put away, you realize you were part of an army, or team that worked together...that the pride in not only the time I put in—but the group that worked together."
