Welcome to the Carl Sandburg/DCS Green Team!
Read more about the Green Team's mission which includes reducing the environmental impact of our school and teaching our students to be good stewards of the Earth.

Who are we?

  • We are a group of parents, teachers, and staff members committed to:
    • Helping to reduce our school’s impact on the environment; and
    • Educating our school community about the importance of environmental issues.

Green team mission:

  • To reduce the environmental impact of our school and to teach our students to be good stewards of the Earth

Green Team accomplishments over the past two years:

  • Educated Students & Staff about recycling, increased our recycling rate from 18 to 43%
  • Drastically reduced the fliers from outside organizations
  • Added milk carton recycling
  • Changed from styrofoam trays to reusable lunch baskets
  • Converted to paperless Informer and added regular "Green Tips"
  • Applied for and received Seed Award and Sustainable Award from Dept of Ecology. With themoney we purchased recycling bins for teachers, environmental books for the library, and reusable party ware.
  • Recycling bins to be included at all school events (ie Carnival)
  • Recognized by King County as a LEVEL TWO GREEN SCHOOL!!!
  • Formed a Student Green Team called Earth Helpers. Students have educated the school about less lunch waste, reusable water bottles, and energy conservation.
  • Held a clean air campaign and became a no-idle school zone.

Earth Helpers will:

  • Continue collecting empty energy bar wrappers for Terracycle (2 cents back per wrapper!)
  • Reinforce no-idling policy.
  • Bring food scrap recycling to our school.

What’s next?

  • Continue to Improve Recycling Rates to at least 50% by creating a recycling movie for the school and by starting food scrap recycling.

 Green Tip

Who couldn't use a cup of coffee in the dreary winter? Consider making your pick me up a little more earth friendly by:

  • Bringing your own re-usable mug to your favorite local cafe
  • Try to avoid using individually packaged sugar, creamer etc. If your café doesn't offer alternatives, politely ask if they would change
  • Make your own coffee
  • Buy organic and shade-grown coffee
  • Only use as much ground coffee as you need
  • Invest in a French Press, it requires no electricity or filters

Coffee grounds make great fertilizer, be sure to compost those in your yard waste bin.
