SPECIAL LIBRARY EVENTS
Book Fair
January 31-February 3, 2012
The Redmond Elementary PTSA and the Library have joined up to have a Deluxe Used Book Fair to benefit the Library. Get ready for some great finds at great prices. More information will be coming out—meanwhile please save books to donate for a great cause and a great event.
A used Book Fair has several advantages:
1. Every student gets two free books from the fair.
2. It’s a “green” event. Used books are being recycled rather than purchasing new ones.
3. It focuses on books. The only thing that will be for sale is books, books and more books.
We look forward to seeing you there.

Hawks Read
Hawks Read is one of the best events at our school. Every week 6th Graders (plus the 5th Graders in the 5/6 Split) spend a few minutes after a recess reading to a little buddy in the First grade or Kindergarten. This gives the 6th Graders an opportunity to practice their reading-out-loud skills (and motivating many to improve their reading skills), gives them a chance to act as a role model and gives them a way to give back to their school community. The younger students have the opportunity to be read to by another student which hopefully encourages them to understand the importance of reading and making them want to read better too! Quite often you’ll even see the little buddy reading to the big buddy. The teachers involved have worked hard to make it a fun, yet highly meaningful opportunity for all of the students. The picture books that are used are supplied by the Redmond Elementary Library each week.
Young Reader’s Choice and Sasquatch Award Book Drawing
Book List and Information
Each year between January and Mid-March, 4-6th Grade students are encouraged to read at least four the selected Young Reader Choice or Sasquatch Award Books. If they do they get entered into a drawing for $10 gift certificates to Borders Books. This creates a lot of discussions between students about these books and encourages a huge number of students to try books they may not have read otherwise an. We usually have about half the students participate.
The “Recommend a Good Book” Drawings
Throughout the year there is a box in the Library where students can recommend books they’ve read that are not currently in the Library. Last year about $750 worth of books were purchased from this list. This helps students be a part of the Library and encourages reading since some really great books are added to the collection. Twice a year there is a drawing for $10 gift certificates to Borders Books from those students who made a recommendation.
