FAQ about the Reflections Art Competition due October 26

1.  Can you tell me more about the theme for 2011 "Diversity Means..."?  One dictionary definition of "diversity" includes "the condition of having or being composed of differing elements: variety."  Diversity is all about differences, for example among people and cultures, animals, or plants.  John Muir students can express their own unique interpretation of what diversity means to them through their writing or artwork.

2.  Is Reflections required?  No, but it is a great way to express yourself artistically.  All students will earn recognition and have their work displayed at the John Muir art show, and many will be selected by judges to go to the district contest.  The class with the most participation will also win prizes.

3.  Can I make my entry as a team with my friend or parent?  No, each work should be the original work of one student.  Please refer to the rules.

4.  Can I tell a story with illustrations, or draw a picture with writing on it?  Yes, as long as it meets the size guidelines, etc. but such an entry must be entered either as Literature or as Visual Arts, and will be judged with other submissions in the same category.

5.  Should I put the title of my work and my name on the front of my artwork?  No, this is not necessary, please use the attached entry form.

6.  How many entries can I submit?  Up to one per category (Literature, Photography, Visual Arts, Film, Dance or Music).

7.  Do I work on this at school or at home?  Most likely at home.  Your parent can support you with guidelines or materials.  Start brainstorming ideas and drafting your artistic vision now!

8.  My child is in Kindergarten, is he/she too young?  Not at all, we are taking entries for Primary (K-2), Intermediate (3-5) and Middle (6-8).

9.  How should I format my work when I bring it to the library collection box Oct. 24-26?  Please follow the detailed rules (from the bulletin board or our website).  Visual arts and photography should be mounted with a glue stick on cardboard or a rigid mat, labeled on the back, then covered with clear plastic to protect it.

10.  When do I need to get a Consent Form signed?  This form is needed only if there is an adult or child who is recognizable in the work.

11.  What do I need to complete on the Entry Form?  You need to fill out all lines applicable for your arts area, including the title of the work and the artist statement, and it must be signed by both parent/guardian and student.

12.  My project is done, can I bring it in early?  Absolutely, bring your finished work and entry form, properly packaged to the office or your teacher, and it will make it to the PTSA Reflections Committee.

Have fun with Reflections!
