 NEWS FROM STATE AND NATIONAL PTA

Common Core Standards:  A set of NATIONAL STANDARDS for student achievement.

Beginning in the spring of 2009, governors and state commissioners of education from 48 states, 2 territories and the District of Columbia committed to developing a common core of state K-12 English-Language Arts and mathematics standards.  This Common Core State Standards Initiative (CCSSI) is a state-led effort coordinated by the National Governors Association (NGA) and the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) with assistance from Project Achieve, ACT and SAT (College Board).  As of August, 2010, 31 states have formally adopted the common core standards.  There is already work being done to develop common standards for additional subject areas.

Randy Dorn, WA State Superintendent, has provisionally adopted these new standards.  They await formal approval by the legislature in the upcoming legislative session.  If the legislature does not take action, then OSPI can proceed with a formal adoption.  If adopted, the new standards would be phased in over 2 years, with full implementation in 2014-15.

LWSD affected by potential change in King County Land Use Policy

 Lake Washington School District plans for growth by purchasing affordable, appropriately-sized lots where they expect expansion will eventually be needed (for example, land for a high school near Redmond Ridge).  

King County may decide to reinterpret the state Growth Management Act in a way that would keep LWSD from using that land for schools because it's classified as "rural". If this reinterpretation is adopted, LWSD would be required to buy "urban" property (generally more expensive and harder to find) when a new school building was needed to accommodate growth in the number of students in the district. The King County Council needs to hear from parents and community members on this issue.
