Pennies for Peace
This is a penny drive to help the children in Pakistan and Afghanistan.  Two years ago we raised $1,138.00.  Let's try and top that amount this year!

Pennies for Peace
Coin Drive at John Muir
November 2-20, 2009

The students and staff at John Muir will be participating in Pennies for Peace coin drive from November 2-20th. Pennies for Peace is a service learning program and started as a result of the work of the mountain climber Greg Mortenson.

Greg became lost as he descended K2, located in Pakistan. The people of the remote mountain village Korphe took him in and nursed him back to health. Greg was appalled when he asked to visit the school and found 82 children kneeling on the frosty ground, in the open. They sat alone working for an entire day waiting for the teacher who would not come until the next day. They had to share the teacher with a neighboring village because a teacher cost one dollar a day.

Greg made a promise to return to Korphe to build a school. Read more about this amazing story.

The Pennies for Peace coin drive is sponsored by the John Muir Library program. During Library classes, Kindergarten through 6th grade children will be learning about how the children in the small villages of Pakistan and Afghanistan live and don’t have opportunities for an education. They will be practicing research and information skills as they learn about the cultures in these countries half-way around the globe. All students will be learning a variety of reading, social studies, geography, and economic concepts and skills.
