 Info from LW’s Prevention Group

On Friday May 17, 2013 LW’s Prevention Group and Leadership students will be doing a school-wide assembly of a Mock DUI scene.  The DUI reenactment is to demonstrate the after effects of one’s decision to drink and drive, as well as other destructive behaviors. This demonstration is very factual and emulates the actions taken by Fire-Rescue and Police authorities after a collision involving impaired driving.  LW has provided this prevention based assembly every other year for many years in the hopes of reducing the number of students who choose to drink or use drugs and drive or partake in other forms of distracted driving such as texting.

One week before the assembly on Friday May 10th, we will be sharing with the students during homeroom more information about the Mock DUI Event including pre-event questions to get the students thinking about and preparing them for the upcoming assembly. We feel that the event will be more meaningful and impactful if students have a discussion about the topic before and after. You might feel that having students answer the questions anonymously will make them feel more comfortable.

After the event on Friday May 17th students will head back to their homerooms to discuss and debrief the post-event questions.  A detailed schedule will be sent to you for the day of assembly.

1.       What does DUI stand for?
DUI is driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Even though we have made remarkable improvements in the total number of teens killed every year while driving, motor vehicles crashes are the number one killer of youth. Here is a good hyperlink to some valid information: http://www.cdc.gov/motorvehiclesafety/teen_drivers/teendrivers_factsheet.html

2.       Have you or someone you know been impacted by someone driving under the influence?

3.       If you know someone is driving under the influence what would you do? What have you done about it in the past?

4.       How do you think actions such as driving under the influence play into the idea of the “ripple effect”?
The ripple effect is thinking outside of the box that as a teenager, the decisions you make only effect you.  This is not true.  Every decision you make has an effect on not only yourself, but those around you—your friends, family, classmates, teachers, job, etc.

Ask the students to name the ripple effect of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs (start by having a student draw a circle on the board with them in center who makes this decision, then add others outside of them—cop pulls you over or finds you crashed—has to do field sobriety test and call parents or has to contact parents you’ve been in accident (maybe fatal)—parents, siblings, family members are effected—then school staff are notified, friends, classmates, community members.

Here is a 1.41 minute video on teens and the ripple effect: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4cJZiqQRjHU

 Finding Kind

 From the Principal

As a result of recent national school safety issues and a recent district safety audit, we will be keeping all exterior doors locked with the exception of the main doors. Our exterior entrances will now only be emergency exits. Students and parents who generally  drop off or arrive from the back side of the building will need to walk around and enter through the front. This enables us to keep track of who is entering the building on a constant basis. We are asking for your cooperation as we continue to look for ways to improve student safety.

If you have questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me.
Sincerely,
Christina Thomas, Principal LWHS
