Library Curriculum 
Library Time and Grading
 
Each student has library class once a week for 30 minutes. By the end of each level, they have had exposure to each critical content area. Students may not have instruction in every content area each year.

Level One - Grades K, 1, 2

  • Understands and uses circulation procedures

  • Uses proper care with materials and books

  • Experiences a variety of genres and types of books that support the Curriculum Framework

  • Develops literature appreciation

  • Receives an introduction to research process

  • Explores electronic information retrieval systems

  • Develops awareness of multimedia technology

  • Understands parts of a book

 

Level Two - Grades 3, 4, 5

  • Understands organizational system of the Library

  • Increases competence and independent use of the Library

  • Explores a variety of genres and types of books that support the Curriculum Framework

  • Develops literature appreciation

  • Uses the research process

  • Uses electronic retrieval systems to access a variety of information

  • Becomes familiar with current multi-media technology and production

  • Uses a variety of print informational resources

 

Level Three - Grades 6, 7, 8

  • Uses Library resources independently

  • Becomes familiar with junior high library facility and resources

  • Continues to explore a variety of genres and types of books that support the Curriculum Framework

  • Continues to use the research process

  • Explores a variety of search techniques

  • Uses electronic retrieval systems to access relevant information from a variety of sources

  • Uses increased variety of telecommunication technology

 

Grading
Each student will be graded regularly on the quality of his/her effort in Library. Participation is defined by a student's effort, attitude, sportsmanship, cooperation and listening. Students who strive for achievement in those areas will make positive and natural progress in their development and will have a positive effect on classmates. Daily effort is evaluated and then given a 4, 3, 2, 1, or N/A based on the following guidelines:
4:  Above Standard
This student performs at standard (3) and in addition is a consistent, independent, and self motivated learner.  The student actively contributes to the classroom learning experience.
3:  At Standard
This student regularly: focuses and engages in the class activity, listens to and follows instructional directions and asks for help when needed, follows class rules, respects people and school property, and cooperates with others to accomplish lesson goals.
2:  Approaching Standard 
This student sometimes:  focuses and engages in the class activity, listens to and follows instructional directions and asks for help when needed, follows class rules, respects people and school property and cooperates with others to accomplish lesson goals.
1:  Not at standard
This student seldom: focuses and engages in the class activity, listens to and follows instructional directions and asks for help when needed, follows class rules, respects people and school property, cooperates with others to accomplish lesson goals.
N/A:  Not applicable
This student does not attend this specialist class or is too new to be assessed.
