SCHOOL NEWS:

Mark your calendars for the Make-It Take-It(MITI) Fair coming up on Saturday, December 5.  The MITI fair has supplies and workspace for kids to make gifts to give during the holidays, at a reasonable cost (generally below $2 per gift). Last year’s gifts included decorated candle holders and BBQ spice rubs. Look for more info in the coming weeks.

Also mark your calendar for the Lakeview Book Fair coming 11/30-12/3.

Veteran’s Appreciation: Tuesday November 10 will be “Red, White and Blue” Spirit Day in honor of Veteran’s Day.  There will be a Veteran’s Day Assembly at 2:30 that day, all veterans are encouraged to attend!  The assembly will feature musical performances from the choir and the Lakeview classrooms as well as the presentation of the flag by Lakeview Girl Scouts and a special chance to honor the veterans in our families and community.

Lakeview Leopard Coffee: The 6th grade will be taking orders for delicious Lakeview Leopard Fresh Roasted Coffee starting next week through the Make It Take It Fair.  This is a 6th grade fundraiser for their OPI trip in spring.  A local gourmet coffee roaster is assisting with the fundraiser.  We will have 1lb Leopard logo whole bean/ground coffee available for pre-order in Regular, Decaf, and Espresso blends for $13 per pound.  Parents may pay and put their order in and the coffee will be delivered soon after on a Friday to your child.  Checks should be made out to Lakeview.  We will also offer this at Conference Week around the school and the Make It Take It Fair. What a great gift for the holidays! Look for a paper copy of the order form to come home soon, grab one from the office, or get it from the forms library.  Any questions, please contact Shelley McKee at daveshell@verizon.net.

Passport Club:  The study map for November will soon be coming home, or you can get it on the web here. A blank study map is here, and the list of locations is here. Please note that the maps and locations for each month are different, and all students begin at level 1 each month.  The next check days are Dec 8 and 9 (with makeups/retests on Dec 14).

Bulletin changes:  Start looking for the emailed Bulletin to reach you by Thursday evening. We hope this will give everyone a chance to read it before the weekend. We’re also tweaking the format a bit to make the news easier to take in.  Please email lakptsanews@gmail.com with any further suggestions.

Quest: The Quest Elementary Program for Highly Capable Students (Grades 1-6) will accept applications for the 2010-2011 school year beginning November 2, 2009, until 4 p.m. on November 30, 2009.

The Elementary Quest program offers two options for students who demonstrate superior ability, who exceed grade level standards in literacy and math, and who exhibit exceptional creativity in the classroom. Full time students are enrolled in an accelerated, self-contained classroom for the full day, five days a week. Enrichment Pull-Out students attend their home school four days a week and a pull-out enrichment classroom one day a week.

More information can be found in the Quest Information packet that will be available at all elementary schools, on the Quest Web site (www.lwsd.org/quest), and at the Quest Office on the third floor of the Resource Center (425-702-3238; Quest@lwsd.org).

ENRICHMENT (Jenny Carlson):

Snow Sports Bus, Part 2: Friday 11/6 is the last day to register for the after school ski program. We still need 9 more students to qualify for a second bus, which will allow the students on the wait list to participate. Please contact Brian Hughes (Brian@CasaDeHughes.com) if you are interested. Registration forms are available here or in the magazine rack in the school lobby.

LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL ABOUT THE FLU

Like other school districts around the country, Lake Washington School District is being hit with cases of the flu. According to King County Public Health, most flu cases in our area now are the H1N1 variety. We are taking steps to reduce the spread of the flu (both H1N1 and seasonal). Thank you to the many parents who have donated hand sanitizer/tissues to our school.

We want to help our students and families stay healthy and to keep our schools open and functioning normally during this flu season. Here are some reminders of the things that we are doing at school that you also can do to help:

  • Remind your student to wash their hands often with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand rub. Remind your student to cover their coughs and sneezes with tissues and wash their hands afterwards. They should cover up their coughs or sneezes using the elbow, arm or sleeve instead of the hand when a tissue is unavailable.
  • Remind your student not to share personal items like drinks, food or unwashed utensils.
  • Know the signs and symptoms of the flu. Symptoms of the flu include fever (100 degrees Fahrenheit, 37.8 degrees Celsius or greater), cough, sore throat, a runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, and feeling very tired. Some people may also vomit or have diarrhea.

If your student does become sick with flu symptoms:

  • Do not send your student to school if they are sick. Any students who are determined to be sick while at school will be sent home. Students who exhibit flu symptoms at school will go to a separate room so they can be kept apart from other students until a parent or guardian can pick them up.
  • Keep sick students at home for at least 24 hours after they no longer have fever or do not have signs of fever, without using fever-reducing drugs.

Even children who have always been healthy before or had the flu before can get a severe case of flu. Call or take your child to a doctor right away if your child of any age has:

·         Flu-like symptoms that improve but then return with fever and worse cough

·         Fast breathing or trouble breathing

·         Bluish or gray skin color

·         Not drinking enough fluids

·         Severe or persistent vomiting

·         Not waking up or not interacting

·         Being so irritable that the child does not want to be held

·         Has other conditions (like heart or lung disease, diabetes, or asthma) and develops flu symptoms, including a fever and/or cough.

Please update your contact and emergency contact numbers at school if they have changed and plan to pick up a sick child within the hour. Parents are advised to arrange for childcare now in case your child becomes ill and is unable to attend school.

The district Web site has a page dedicated to H1N1 updates: http://www.lwsd.org/News/News-and-Announcements/Pages/H1N1-Flu-Update-9-18-09.aspx. This page includes links to additional resources such as the Center for Disease Control (CDC), Public Health Seattle & King County and Washington State Department of Health. Public Health’s flu hotline is available Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 877-903-KING (5464). They will have information about H1N1 flu vaccine clinics as vaccine becomes available.

Sincerely,

Linda Hughes, Principal
Lakeview Elementary
