SCHOOL ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Sally
Foster: Thanks to all of the students, parents and Lakeview staff
who collected Sally Foster orders. Together we sold $10,900 worth of
goods, which will earn the PTSA over $5000. Orders will arrive at
school on Nov 16th and your student will bring the items home.

ALERT: 15 VOLUNTEERS NEEDED for Vision testing and Passport club (see info directly
below…)
Vision and Hearing Testing, Wed, Nov 4th: The PTSA may not be able to help keep your kids from
getting the swine flu, but they do help check that all 480 kids (except in families
who opt out) can see and hear well. Once a year, parent volunteers, trained by
the school nurse, screen the kids individually to check both their distance and
near vision, using eye charts and supplies provided by the district. They also
check hearing. Should your child seem to have any difficulty, a report is sent
home to you for your information. It’s a formal check that can help
catch vision or hearing problems or changes early.
To help, please contact Nora
Newman at knnewman@aol.com or 828-8954. The school nurse will provide training at
Passport Check Day: Volunteers
needed from 9-10:20 on Tues, Nov 3 and Thurs, Nov 5 to quiz kids on the October
passport club locations (a reference map is provided for the checker). If
you can help on either day, please contact Emily Staples at emily@brianandemily.com or 827-2961.

SCHOOL
NEWS:
Recruiting
Student Green Team: We are
looking for 2nd-6th grade Lakeview students who want to improve the world!! If
your child likes to Recycle, Pick up litter,
Reduce waste or Plant things,
they should consider joining the Green Team! Interested students should come to
the Lakeview Green Team meeting in the upstairs 3rd grade shared space during
lunch (bringing their lunch with them) on November 4th to find out more.
Contact: Carol Buckingham, strdesigns@msn.com.
Student Directory: The student directories were distributed to students
this week. Every household with a PTSA member should have received
one. If yours is missing, please contact Brenda Kern (dbkern@verizon.net). Just think…if
you had this year’s directory, you could have looked up Brenda’s
email in the COOL new email listings at the back! Not a PTSA member? You
can still get a directory by sending In a request and $10 (checks to
Lakeview PTSA) to school.
Library Birthday Book Club: One of the great programs that Lakeview offers is
the Birthday Book Club. For a suggested donation of $20, our librarian,
Mrs Georges, will select a new library book to present to your child on or
around their birthday (or any special occasion you choose). The book will have
a bookplate with your child’s name in it, and they will be the first to
check it out. When they’re finished with it, it goes back to the
library to share with friends, siblings and the rest of the school. To
sign your kids up, please return this
form (also in the school lobby) to the PTSA along with a check.
Teacher Grants: Did you
know Lakeview PTSA gives grants to our teachers?
Each year in our budget, Lakeview
PTSA sets aside funds that can be requested by our teachers in the form of a
grant. In the past these funds have funded a whole host of items that allow our
teachers to be more effective or simply to enrich their teaching opportunity.
For the 2009/2010 school year the PTSA set aside $1500. All Lakeview staff were
given an opportunity to submit a request and as of October 6th, we had 3
submissions. The review committee has elected to fund all three requests in
their entirety. Donna Allee has requested $350 to fund a Woodland Park Zoo
experience for The Learning Center (the special needs classroom). Tracy Ferries
has requested $174.50 to replenish her depleting literacy activity supplies
that keep her first grade students engaged as they rotate through their reading
stations. Rachel Bracket has requested enough funds to allow her to add a
Ukulele course for our 4th - 6th graders. An award of $500 enables her to
procure the instruments and replicate a successful program she built at her previous
school. Lakeview PTSA feels fortunate to be able to supplement some of the
specific needs of our teachers and students. If you have any questions
regarding this process please email Katherine Kehrli at
lakptsaacademics@gmail.com.
Reflections: 113 students entered 137 beautiful pieces of art in this
year’s Reflections program. The artwork has been on display outside
the library all this week, and most classes have had a chance to visit the
display. Look for a booklet with the literature entries to come out in the next
couple of weeks. There were 91 visual arts, 23 literature, and 23 photography
entries. Thanks to all the students who participated! They are:

FROM
THE PRINCIPAL…
Dear Parents:
It has been a great start to the school year and it is hard
to believe it is almost time for Thanksgiving. I wanted to give you an
update on the work that our staff has been doing regarding our continuous
improvement plan for the year.
The staff meets every Wednesday afternoon and twice a month
before school. They are divided into cross grade level work teams focused
on literacy and social studies; math and science; school and behavior.
These teams look at performance data from the WASL, district tests, class
assessments, and building data; discuss best practices that will improve
student performance; and then determine what our next steps need to be.
Our data from last year was strong and showed improvements so we are continuing
and deepening many of the strategies we used successfully last year. We
also are focusing on how to challenge each student. To do this we will
be: defining the learning targets for the lesson (look for the “I can, I
know, I use, etc . . . “statements that start learning targets);
assessing if students learned what we had planned for them to learn (the
learning target); and then what we need to do if they still don’t
understand or if they already know the information or have the skill.
This process we call defining learning targets and using common assessments
across the grade level to guide instruction and interventions. Each grade
level team has set goals for academic achievement in the areas of reading,
writing, math and science. The cross grade level work teams are also
determining what classroom and district data we need to gather to monitor our
progress toward our goals. In addition to this work on our
continuous improvement plan, the teachers are also learning the new social
studies curriculum. This new curriculum is proving to be engaging and
challenging as students are exposed to new concepts in the area of social
studies.
If you want to find out more about our continuous
improvement work, please mark your calendar and plan to attend a parent meeting
on Thursday, December 3 6:30-7:30 about our Continuous Improvement Plan for
2010!
Sincerely,
Linda Hughes, Principal
ADVOCACY (Neicole Crepeau):
Don't forget to
vote!! Your opinion won't have any affect unless you mail in
your ballot. Ballots are due Nov. 3rd.
Be informed on I-1033: Initiative 1033, which will be on the general election
ballot this fall, could affect school funding and your child’s education.
Learn more about the initiative and what it will mean for our state. The WPTSA
has provided information on its stand and links where you can find out more
about the initiative at http://www.wastatepta.org/advocacy/index.html.
THANK
YOU:
Student Directory: Thanks to Brenda Kern and
Karen Tollefson for creating the 2009-2010 Student Directory. They
tracked down contact info for most all the kids in the school and entered,
formatted and proofread the directory, with help from Rainer Huber (who entered
PTSA membership info), Karen Tipp, Erin Pederson,
Sarah Stone, Tracey Bernardo, Susie Arnold, Mrs Peterson and Mrs Moran.
Reflections: Thanks to Cheryle Elder, Karen
Tipp, Danita Carter and Gayane Tumanyan for putting together Lakeview’s
Reflections Gallery outside the library.

sign students up for new classes may be required to chaperone one or two
classes, depending on enrollment. Chaperones must have completed the LWSD
volunteer background check and be a Lakeview PTSA member.
WEBSITE
TIP (Tracey Bernardo):
Have you ever wondered how much use the Lakeview website
gets? Here are the numbers for the last 30 days:
696 unique visitors (not counting repeat visitors)
4,249 pages where viewed by 1,531 visitors (people may have
visited more than once)
31% of visitors were first time visitors
3RD PARTY FLIERS: (these are fliers/advertisements from
non-profit groups in the area who provide some kind of service for kids or
families. The fliers are approved by the district, but are not endorsed or
sponsored by them or by the school or PTSA)
The current 3rd party fliers are on the school
website under For
Parents/Community Bulletin Board.
The LWSF is non-profit organization that supports our
school district, Lake Washington School District (LWSD). Sarah Stone is the
Lakeview Ambassador to the LWSF.
New Teacher Grants: In September the
Foundation awarded $200 each to 54 new teachers in the district. Kelly
Kursteiner from the district told us “New teachers spend a great deal of
money out of their own pocket trying to get classrooms set up and ready to
welcome their students the first day of school. I can’t tell you
how many times I’ve heard a new teacher say how thankful they were to
receive this $200 grant money to relieve the financial burden of preparing
their classroom. The foundation is such a blessing to our new
teachers!”
LINKS, Looking into the Needs of
Kids and Schools is a volunteer and mentoring program that started as a
grassroots program of the Lake Washington School District PTSA in 2004.
It was adopted by the District in the 2008-09 school year, with funding
provided by the Foundation. We are proud to see it become a fully-funded
program for 2009-10, with grants obtained through the Foundation’s
Grantwriting Committee from both private and public organizations. LINKS
now has 63 volunteers and has many more requests for mentors and volunteers at
schools throughout the district. To find out more, go to www.lwsd.org/links.
Our Classroom and School
Enrichment Grant applications have been received and are being reviewed by
community volunteers. Stay tuned for an announcement in mid-November on
the grants awarded.
