Swine flu:  Up-to-date information on the swine flu is posted on the district website:  http://www.lwsd.org/News/News-and-Announcements/Pages/H1N1-Flu-Update-9-18-09.aspx  and also on King County public health website, which will post locations for vaccinations as they become available: http://www.kingcounty.gov/healthservices/health/preparedness/pandemicflu/swineflu.aspx.

Lice: As jacket and hat season returns, it’s a good time to review information on lice: http://www.kingcounty.gov/healthservices/health/communicable/diseases/headlice.aspx

Quest: The Quest Elementary Program for Highly Capable Students (Grades 1-6) will accept applications for the 2010-2011 school year beginning November 2, 2009, until 4 p.m. on November 30, 2009.

The Elementary Quest program offers two options for students who demonstrate superior ability, who exceed grade level standards in literacy and math, and who exhibit exceptional creativity in the classroom. Full time students are enrolled in an accelerated, self-contained classroom for the full day, five days a week. Enrichment Pull-Out students attend their home school four days a week and a pull-out enrichment classroom one day a week.

More information can be found in the Quest Information packet that will be available at all elementary schools, on the Quest Web site (www.lwsd.org/quest), and at the Quest Office on the third floor of the Resource Center (425-702-3238; Quest@lwsd.org).

All parents interested in the Quest Program are invited to attend one of the Quest Elementary Information Night sessions on Thursday, November 5 from 4:30-6 p.m. or 7-8:30 p.m. at Rose Hill Junior High School (13505 NE 74th St, Redmond, WA 98052). This program will explain more specifically what Quest offers to highly capable, academically gifted children. If you plan to bring your children to the information session, we would recommend that you attend the early meeting.

SCHOOL NEWS:

Green Team & Wildlife Certification: Thanks, in part, to the work of last year’s 6th grade green team, Kirkland has just been officially certified by the National Wildlife Foundation as a Community Wildlife Habitat - only the 34th community in the nation and the first on the Eastside to receive this honor! The 6th grade green team applied to have Lakeview Elementary certified through NWF’s Wildlfe Habitat program, and this certification was an important step toward the City's achieving Community Certification.

Walk to School Week was a big success!  We averaged 200 walkers each day, for a total of nearly 1000 walkers for the week!  Kirkland Fire and Police officers joined us on Wednesday and the kids got to check out a police car and motorcycle, and a fire engine.

The class with the most walkers was Ms. Ferries first grade class - Congratulations on winning the ice cream party!  And a big thanks to all who walked to school.  Keep it up!

Passport Club:    All of the classes came to the first Passport Check Days and did a great job navigating the continents, oceans, seas, mountains and deserts.  For any students who were absent, or would like to try again, there will be a makeup day on October 22 during the lunch recesses. The next Passport Check Days will be Tuesday, Nov 3 from 9-10:20 and Thursday, Nov 5 from 9-10:20. A paper copy of the study map will come home today, and extras are in the magazine rack in the school lobby. All of the study maps and location lists for the year are now on the website (password: Leopard), as well as the schedule for the check days.  Read here for more info on the program, and email emily@brianandemily.com if you’d like to be a  passport checker on check day.

Bike Safety: The Cascade Bicycle Club offers a school program for 3-6th grade classes to learn more about bike safety and we have been using the bikes in PE this week. Because of scheduling and maintenance issues the bikes will be leaving Lakeview Thursday October 15. Some classes, depending on when they meet, may not have had many opportunities to ride the bicycles. The Cascade Bike Club has agreed to bring them back to Lakeview in the spring so we can review and practice our bicycle skills. In March  the program will be offered to 3-5th grades. Thanks to those students who remembered to bring in their own helmets. We will ride more in the spring!                    Thank you!     ~Mrs. Knight

1st-4th Grade Math Club: Beginning in November, grades 1-4 will have an open Math Club day during their middle recess. The following schedule is proposed:

    Mondays- 1st grade: 12:00-12:30

    Tuesdays-2nd grade: 12:00-12:30

    Wednesdays- 3rd grade: 12:00-12:30

    Thursdays- 4th grade: 11:30-12:00

The clubs will meet in the 3rd grade shared space outside of the math lab. Volunteer parents will run the clubs by choosing a game for each week, prepping for it, teaching it to the kids, and monitoring them while they play. Initially it would probably require about 1 ½ hours/week of time (which would include the prep time, the actual club, and the clean up).

There will be a meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 20th at 3:30 for all parents interested in volunteering. It will be held in the 3rd grade shared space. Once there are firm volunteers for all grades, more information will be sent home about the clubs. Questions? Contact hnease@lwsd.org or kadams@lwsd.org.

Reflections: The Reflections art program due date is coming up: Monday, October 26th.  For more info: Reflections program info, Reflections entry form, Reflections rules.

NEW TO LAKEVIEW:

Mrs West is new to Lakeview this year. Here’s her profile:

I was born in Pennsylvania, but my family soon migrated (in covered wagons) to Bellevue, where I spent most of my formative years. I have a degree in psychology, a master’s in Educational Technology, and I’m also a National Board Certified Teacher and facilitator. I’m a Husky; I received my degree and teaching certificate from the University of Washington, and last year I completed the first year of a doctoral program there. I’ve taught in the Lake Washington School District for 16 years.

In elementary school I was particularly interested in two things: reading and science. I loved to search through the woods near my house for salamanders, insects and other critters. One day I trapped a mole in a glass jar and brought it home, but much to my surprise my parents insisted that I release it back to the wild. I also caught small fish in the local stream expecting them to feel right at home in a little glass fishbowl in the laundry room. It turned out that these fish liked to jump, and they all ended up behind our washing machine. Again, I was quite surprised at the reaction of my parents to this eventual discovery!

As an adult, I still enjoy reading and I participate in two book clubs. My additional hobbies are cooking and playing USTA league tennis. My children are grown, having recently graduated from various colleges around the country, and are pursuing their interests.  One has his own software http://www.lwsd.org/school/lakeview/About-Us/PublishingImages/bubba.jpgcompany in Silicon Valley, another is in the aerospace industry and my youngest has her heart set on becoming a naturopath.  My husband Steve and I greatly enjoy living near downtown Kirkland with our toy fox terrier, Bubba.

I am extremely thrilled to teach at Lakeview Elementary this year.  I look forward to getting to know the students, staff and parents.

Got a question?  Send it to the Bulletin, and we’ll try to find the answer.
