ALERT: Lakeview Shirt and Bag update: Thank you for all your  shirt and bag orders!  We are getting ready to place the order but need to let you know that the number sizing  is correct but the letter sizing had to be corrected only on the kids’ shirts.  The original sizing was:  s(4-6), m(6-8), l(10-12), xl(14-16) and the corrected sizes are xs(4-6), s(6-8), m(10-12), l(14-16).  We are going by the number size and your kid’s shirt size will reflect the numbered sizes, 4-6, 6-8, 10-12, 14-16.   If you need to change anything on your order for kids shirts, please email either Shelley Swanson at Shelley.Swanson@microsoft.com  or Cheryle Elder at cheryle_elder@comcast.net  by Wednesday, October 14. ENRICHMENT (Jenny Carlson):

Changes to Before and After School Enrichment Classes:  The Lakeview PTSA is modifying how before and after school enrichment classes are run to align better with state PTSA policies and insurance guidelines.  This means that starting with all new classes, a parent chaperone will be required to be present at each class.  Families who sign students up for classes may be required to chaperone one or two classes, depending on enrollment.  Chaperones must have completed the LWSD volunteer background check and be a Lakeview PTSA member.  If you are passionate about a class or have questions email lakptsaenrichment@gmail.com.

Destination ImagiNation (DI) is a unique program that offers participants a real-world experience in creativity, teamwork and problem solving. Teams are comprised of up to seven Lakeview students and work together for several weeks to create their solutions to Team Challenges, which are given beforehand and which can have a theatrical, structural, improvisational, scientific or technical focus.  The regional tournament is on Feb 27, 2010 in Issaquah.  Lakeview had one team participate last year and they had a great time and received positive feedback.  If you would like to participate again this year, or as a first-timer you are interested in learning more, please visit www.idodi.org or www.wa-di.org or contact Chitra Subramanian at chitrasa@hotmail.com with any questions.

NEW TO LAKEVIEW:

http://www.lwsd.org/school/lakeview/About-Us/PublishingImages/LEVINSON.JPGMrs Levinson is new to Lakeview this year. Here’s her profile:

My name is Keri Levinson and I am so excited to join the second grade team at Lakeview this year. I grew up in the San Diego area, but always had family in the Northwest and knew that someday I wanted to move here. I made the move in the early 90’s to finish college at SPU. I also began my education career in the Lake Washington School District (LWSD) during that time as an instructional assistant and coach at Finn Hill Junior High.

After I finished my degree in History/Political Science and received my teaching certificate, I began my teaching experience in the Northshore School District at Kenmore Elementary teaching third and fourth grade and working as a science specialist for grades K-6. I then moved to Fernwood Elementary where I taught fifth grade as a science specialist. The past two years I have been a substitute in the LWSD. I have taught in many, many, schools, and many classrooms. I am excited to use this knowledge and experience in our classroom this year!

My basic teaching philosophy is that ALL children are capable and are priceless parts of our team. Each student has something to contribute to our class to help us all to learn. I strive to challenge my students to be their very best and to meet and exceed the goals they set for themselves. My goal for them is to have each child feel valued and to reach their personal best at all they do both academically and socially.

Besides being a teacher, I am a wife and a mom. My husband and I have three children. Emma is nine and a fourth grader at Peter Kirk, Olivia is six and a new full day Kindergartener also at Kirk, Caleb is three and in preschool at Bucky Beaver. We enjoy traveling, camping, cooking and entertaining, and trying new fun restaurants.

Q: How does lunch work?

A: It is an engineering feat to get 480 students fed at Lakeview each day.

ARRIVAL: Each class is led to the lunch room part of the gym by their teacher if they’re coming from class, or by an Instructional Assistant (IA) if they’re coming from the playground. Each class has an assigned set of tables at which to eat. The kids who have packed their lunches bring them with them and proceed directly to the class tables.

BUYING LUNCH:  The kids who are buying lunch go to the lunch card rack where the cards are laid out by class; they find the lunch card with their name on it, and put it into a bin for “milk only” or for “full lunch”. The cost of meal/lunch is deducted from their card at a later point, but the kids do not need to wait in line while this is done.  Should there be problems with their lunch card, Mrs Boone is at hand, and can answer questions.  The kids can then go directly to pick out their lunch. Need to buy or add money to a lunch card?  The District will call you on Tuesdays or Wednesdays if you child’s lunch card is out of money.  They’ll even call you on Fridays to alert you if a card is low on money.

SCHOOL LUNCH MENU: The school has no food preparation equipment.  There are only warming ovens, refrigerators, and one staff person. Nevertheless, the school serves a hot choice and a cold choice each day, as well as a daily grilled chicken or burger sandwich, a daily variety of pizza,, an assortment of cold sandwiches, and a vegetarian option. Lunch also includes an unlimited offering bar with fruits and veggies.  From time to time the kitchen will run out of an item, and will substitute from the food on hand.  The lunch menu is published here. Students can volunteer to help serve lunch.  The teachers collect the names of kids who want to help, and each week a different class’s volunteers get a turn.  Student helpers help out during their lunch period (wearing gloves) – they help only for a few minutes so that they have time to eat.

TIME TO EAT:  During lunch the students can talk quietly among themselves while they eat.  They are supervised by 3-4 staff people, who wander among the tables and help with odds and end, like opening reluctant bottles and thermoses and handing out extra napkins. The gym has gym acoustics, and it can get quite loud – the staff tries to keep the noise at a reasonable level.

CLEANUP: When kids are finished eating, they bring their trash to the garbage.  Lakeview does separate its trash: there are separate garbage bins for food waste; trash; and plastic bottles, milk cartons and aluminum cans. The kids who bought lunch return their lunch trays. Again, students can volunteer for the “green team” with the lunchroom staff, and they then get a turn helping to sort the trash, recyclables, and food waste, and collecting the trays. The green team helpers are supplied with gloves and aprons.  Those kids who brought their lunch put their lunch bags into a class bin, and two kids from the class return the bin to the classroom. Any coats or lunch bags/thermoses left behind are put on the lost and found rack outside the gym.

GUESTS: You may join your child for lunch.  Simply sign in at the front office, and meet your child in the lunchroom and pay with cash or your child’s lunch card.

Got a question?  Send it to the Bulletin, and we’ll try to find the answer.
