SCHOOL NEWS:

Walk to School Week (WTS) is next week! The week is sponsored by the PTSA to promote safe walking habits and exercise. Check out the recommended safe walking routes to Lakeview here. See your paper kidmail packet for traffic safety tips.  Each day your child walks to school during WTS week, they can stop by the raffle table at the front of the school to enter their name for a drawing (note that we’re not sending home tickets this year – instead they will be available at the table). The more they walk, the more chances they have to win one of the great prizes in the drawing on Friday. The class that has the most walkers at the end of the week will win an ice cream party!  Bus riders can also enter the raffle by filling out a safety quiz (again, see the paper kidmail packet). On Wednesday, Kirkland Firefighters, Kirkland motorcycle police and PedBee will be in front of the school to celebrate with us.  Don’t miss the fun!

It’s Dance Week too! Next week DJ Galen will be at the school teaching the kids some dance moves. Every class will have 30 minutes of dance class each day to get ready for the Lakeview Hoedown Family Dance Night: Friday, Oct 9th, 6:30-8:30pm in the gym.  Free entry, with hot dogs, cotton candy and lemonade for sale.  Recognition for best dressed kid and adult.

Skate King and Glow bracelets: To help celebrate the 1st Lakeview Skate King night on Thursday, Oct 8th, the 6th graders will be selling non-toxic glow bracelets for $1 at school. They will be on sale on Wed., Oct 7 at lunch recess and on Thur., Oct. 8  at last recess. The packages should NOT be opened at school. If you’re coming to Skate King, save them up to glow there!  Also a reminder that kids need a permission slip to come to Skate King.  Both Skate King and the bracelets are fundraisers for the 6th grade OPI science field trip.

Passport Club: Passports and study maps were handed out to most classes this week.  Your child should have (or will soon) come home with information explaining the program, or you can read it here.  The first Passport Check Day will be Tuesday, October 13th, from 9-11am. To help make this first day run smoothly, it would be great to have a lot of volunteers: contact emily@brianandemily.com or 425.827.2961. On Passport Check Day students are asked to find locations on a blank map.  They may study as many levels as they like (Kindergarten and 1st grade only go to level 3).

The locations for September, which will be checked on 10/13, are below. Extra study maps are on the rack in the school lobby:

Level 1: North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, Antarctica.

Level 2: Atlantic Ocean, Pacific Ocean, Indian Ocean.

Level 3: Arctic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, Equator, Prime Meridian, Mediterranean Sea.

Level 4: Oceania, Arabian Sea, Bering Sea, Gulf of Mexico, Hudson Bay, Tasman Sea, Caspian Sea, Black Sea, Red Sea, Bay of Bengal.

Level 5: Sahara Desert, Kalahari Desert, Great Victoria Desert, Andes Mountain Range, Himalaya Mountain Range.

Fitness Calendar program:  The vision statement of the Lake Washington School District Physical Education Program is:” All students develop a personal commitment towards a healthy, active lifestyle.” This year in PE we are continuing a program I introduced last year; monthly fitness calendars. Students have been learning about fitness calendars in PE and will have an opportunity to earn a special fitness medal at the final assembly at the end of our school year. When a student records physical activity (not PE) three times each week for a month, they may select a treat from the Fitness Calendar Treasure Box when they bring the calendar to PE. Students that complete 8 of the 10 possible fitness calendars during the school year will receive special recognition at our all school assembly in June. Calendars may be printed off the Lakeview website or are available in the file by the gym door. Please remember to sign your student’s calendar. Please talk with your student about participating in this activity as a family! Thank you!   ~Mrs Knight (nknight@lwsd.org)

Bicycle Safety Program:  All 4-6th graders will participate in the Bicycle Safety Program sponsored by The Cascade Bike Club from October 5-23 during their P.E. class. They will learn about bike safety and will ride bicycles (with helmets and surgical caps) through a course designed by the CBC. If your student would like to wear their own helmet, please have them drop it off in the gym on the day of their PE class.  Please note that we may close the gate to the “Student pick up” area after 9:30 each morning for the bikers’ safety.

Polite Pumpkins: Lakeview will be focusing on kindness through October with “Polite Pumpkins”. Each classroom will award 1 or 2 paper pumpkins at the end of every day to students who were especially kind that day.  At the end of every week each teacher will hold his/her own drawing and one child from each class will get a baby pumpkin as a prize. Donations of baby pumpkins are appreciated!  They may be sent in to class with your child.

PTSA Meeting Minutes: Read them here. Thank you to all the staff (which was most of it) and parents who attended .

Emergency prep information:  If you have a child with a life-threatening condition and/or a food allergy, don't forget to make up an emergency box that contains the items they would need in order to get by if they were to be at school for an extended emergency stay. If this includes medication, you must include an authorization form and the box will be stored in the nurse's office. Make sure to let your child's team know about the box! To get an authorization form, go to: http://www.lwsd.org/Parents/Student-Health/Pages/Student-Health-Forms.aspx

HELP WANTED (lakptsavolunteer@gmail.com) We’re still looking for lunch-time book club leaders for the following classes: Ferries, Hudson, Jensen, Penton, Fraley/Hasty, Johnson, Boradori, Adams/Coghlan, and Remfrey. And math club leaders for these classes: Hudson, Penton, Levinson, Johnson, Tiffany, Boradori, and Adams/Coghlan. Let us know if you might be interested, and we’ll send you more information so you can see what they involve.  The commitment can once a month or just several times in the year.

PTSA MEMBERSHIP (Rainer Huber)You can still join the PTSA by filling out the blue form from your first day packet (also in the school lobby) or by filling it out here.

Why join the PTSA?  You need only read this week’s Bulletin to see how much the PTSA adds to Lakeview:  Walk to School Week, the dance classes in school and the Hoedown Family Dance Night, the Passport Club, the after-school enrichment classes, the school website and the Bulletin itself and all happen through the work of the PTSA. In addition, the PTSA spends over $150 per child for academic enrichment through things like the Accelerated Reader program, the art program, field trips and classroom supplies.

Join the PTSA to show your support, to give it legitimacy, and to get a free Lakeview Student Directory (coming soon, with email addresses this year!!). We currently have 263 parent members and 19 staff members for a total of 282.  The school serves about 350 families.

ADVOCACY (Neicole Crepeau): What’s the  scariest thing I learned at my PTA training?

Today, a Washington state student can graduate from high school without enough credits to meet even the minimum requirements to get into a four-year college. Most parents assume that if their child graduates from high school, they will at least have met the minimum course requirements to get into college. Not so. By the time your elementary school child graduates, though, the minimum requirements will match the entry requirements for most colleges.

Why? Because parents called or wrote their legislators.

Legislation was passed to make graduation requirements more stringent.

I’m Neicole Crepeau, and I’m your VP of Advocacy in the PTSA this year. Here’s my pledge to you:

-   I won’t inundate you with emails and bulletins about education-related legislation.

-   The emails/bulletins I do send will be short and to the point, with links for those who want additional information.

-   I’ll make it as easy as I can for you to take action on your children’s behalf.

Please email me at lakptsaadvocacy@gmail.com if you’d like to be involved, or return this form.

FUNDRAISING (Mark Jensen):   The Sally Foster giftwrap/Otis Spunkmeyer cookie dough catalog will be coming home on Oct 6th. Up to 50% of every purchase goes directly to the PTSA.
