SCHOOL ANNOUNCEMENTS:

Junk Mail?  We’re concerned that the Bulletin email may have recently started landing in your Junk email folder – perhaps because we have lately had a lot of links at the top. If you are not getting the Bulletin, please look in your Junk mail folder, and let us know if you find it there. We may try sending you the Bulletin in alternate formats.

Pick-up/drop-off reminder:  The purpose of the pick-up/drop-off zone by the entrance to the main office is for parents to be able to pull in and quickly drop off or pick up their child.  Cars may not be left unattended in this area.   If parents need to go into the school for business or spend additional time dropping off or picking up their child, they should park in a designated parking spot.  Thanks for your help with keeping traffic flowing in both of our  drop off/pick up areas!

FUNDRAISING:

From the PACE fundraising FAQ:

HOW DOES THE 20% AND THE 5% WORK:

·         First - become a member by registering at the PACE website - www.4PACE.com.  The membership fee is $25.00 and our school receives $10.00 of that registration fee.

·         Once registered, shop and dine at any of the participating local restaurants and retailers listed in the PACE directory. Our school receives 5% - on every visit. These businesses are committed to supporting our school throughout the year. We receive these funds monthly, which creates a very nice annuity for us.

·          Save 20% - on your first visit to all PACE restaurants. Receive Special "Member Only" savings at PACE retailers throughout the year. Your savings will be mailed to you in a check once the value has reached $10.00. You can check your balance directly by logging into your account using your email and password you registered with.

ENRICHMENT:

Two more after-school classes have just been arranged:  Spanish and Fitness Sports Camp. The other classes are Lego, Musical Minds, Science, Chess and Art.

The Art class for 8-12 year olds from 3:20-4:20 on Wednesday afternoons has been cancelled due to insufficient interest. The time slot may open up for younger kids – look for more info next week.

These classes are provided by vendors who are invited to the school by the PTSA based on parent interest. The classes are run by the vendors, and the fee is paid directly to them.

HELP NEEDED:

Classroom help: If you didn’t get a chance to sign up to volunteer in your kid’s classroom at Curriculum Night, feel free to contact the teacher. Get their email address from the staff directory.

Grant Writer:  Are there any activities or field trips you’d like to see funded at Lakeview?  For just 4-6 hours of your work, Lakeview can apply for a variety of grants which are typically for up to $500-$1500. The 2nd grade art trip to the Seattle Art Museum and the 2nd grade supplementary science books have been funded by grants. To get an idea of what grant applications look like, take a look at these:  the Target field trip grant application, Lk WA Schools Foundation(LWSF) grant, WA state PTA Applegate grant. The PTSA has a collection of past grant applications to use as reference.  You can contact Mrs Hughes, your child’s teacher, the PTSA co-prez, or Mrs Essig (for 6th gr OPI trip) if you’d like to write, but need an idea. Grant applications tend to be due in the next 2-6 weeks. If you do decide to work on an application, just let the co-prez know, and they’ll facilitate however they can.

WEBSITE TIP:

A plug for the 3rd party advertising fliers on the school website under  For Parents/Community Bulletin Board. The district has done a great job of organizing and maintaining the fliers for groups that serve Lakeview.  This is where you’ll find info on how to register for the Lakeview sports teams, and the Lakeview Cub Scout and Girl Scout troops, as well as other programs in the Kirkland area. Many of the groups, like the Cub and Girl Scouts, have their information night in the fall – the details are all up there.

3RD PARTY FLIERS: (these are fliers/advertisements from non-profit groups in the area who provide some kind of service for kids or families. The fliers are approved by the district, but are not endorsed or sponsored by them or by the school or PTSA)

Ditto the website tip above. The current 3rd party fliers on the school website under  For Parents/Community Bulletin Board include information on art, drama, choir, dance, martial arts, drill team, Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, Campfire, and basketball classes.

NEW TO LAKEVIEW:

Q: Does Lakeview do anything to help new kids get acquainted with the school?

A: The counselor, Mrs Ben-Menachem, has had gatherings for the students new to Lakeview this year at each of the grade levels. They talk about Lakeview, get to know one another and get a little goody bag to take home with them. New students who arrive during the school year will be buddied up with a classmate and given an Newcomer Passport to get stamped around from key people around the school.  After they’ve filled it out they bring it to Mrs Ben-Menachem to collect a welcome goody bag.

Got a question?  Send it to the Bulletin, and we’ll try to find the answer.
