SCHOOL
NEWS:
BBQ: We’re calling the back-to-school
BBQ a success! The weather was sunny and about 500 dinners were served. It
seemed that by having it in the evening more families were able to come, and
that it did work as a way to let families know about some of the programs
offered by the PTSA.
Family
Dance Night: The
next big Lakeview community event will be the Family Dance Night on Friday,
October 9. During the previous week, all the classes will learn dances with DJ Galen
during music and PE classes, so they will have some pretty cool moves by Friday
night!
Reflections Art Program: The theme this year is
“Beauty is…”. The entry categories are literature, music
composition, photography, visual arts, film, and choreography/dance. The rules
and forms for this year can be found at www.wastatepta.org/programs/reflections.
Entries will be due by October 26, and will be on display at the school for the
week following. The PTSA will again supply take-home art kits to rotate through
the 1st and 2nd grade classrooms.
Special needs: If you would like to be part of the Special Needs Group
private email distribution list, please contact Chairperson Beth Angelo 4bangelo3@verizon.net.
Correction to the Friday popcorn sales info from last
week:
Popcorn will be sold during afternoon recesses on Friday
rather than during lunch recesses. The cost this year will be $ .75 a
bag. Afternoon recesses are as follows: Grades K-3:
FUNDRAISING:
The PACE fundraising information packets are being sent home
with students today. To see information on the program online, visit www.4pace.com. If you joined PACE last year,
you will receive an email when your subscription is up. Your renewal is
automatic (unless cancelled). Last year the PACE program brought in $8295 to
the Lakeview PTSA.
ENRICHMENT:
All the enrollment information for the fall after-school
classes is now available on the website: Lego,
Musical
Minds, Science,
Chess,
and Art.
These classes are provided by vendors who are invited to the school by the PTSA
based on parent interest. The classes are run by the vendors, and the fee is
paid directly to them.
HELP
NEEDED:
If you didn’t get a chance to sign up to volunteer in
your kid’s classroom at Curriculum Night, feel free to contact the
teacher. Get their email address from the staff
directory.
For non-classroom activities, please do return the volunteer
form from your first day packet, or fill it out here.
We welcome any extended family or friends who want to help,
though all must fill out the district’s Volunteer
Application every 2 years.
WEBSITE
TIP:
Create an account for the Tandem calendar provided by the
district at http://lakewashington.intand.com,
and you can download the calendar for all your kids’ schools to your own
calendar software (like MS Outlook), and get email updates when event times are
changed.
3RD PARTY FLIERS: (these are fliers/advertisements from
non-profit groups in the area who provide some kind of service for kids or
families. The fliers are approved by the district, but are not endorsed or
sponsored by them or by the school or PTSA)
Check out the current 3rd party fliers on the
school website under For
Parents/Community Bulletin Board. The fliers there currently include
information on art, drama, choir, dance, martial arts, drill team, Cub Scouts,
Campfire, and basketball classes.
NEW TO LAKEVIEW:
Q: What are A and B weeks?
A: In order to schedule the
“specialist” classes (music, library, physical education (PE) and
computer lab) the classes use a 2 week schedule (A is the first week, B the
second). They will have PE and music 3 times within each 2 week period.
This means your child may have P.E. on Tuesday in Week A, but have P.E. on
Monday and Thursday in Week B. Contact your child’s teacher if you
weren’t provided your child’s specialist schedule at Curriculum
Night.
Q: How is art taught?
A: Lakeview does not have an art teacher on
staff; instead art is taught by parent volunteers – our art
docents. Read here
to find out more about the art docent program.
Q: What is OPI?
A: OPI is the Olympic Park Institute,
which runs outdoor science education programs in Olympic National Park. For the
last several years, the 6th grade classes have gone on a 3-day trip
there in the spring. The program is paid for by a fee paid by the 6th
grade families, a contribution from the PTSA, and by fundraising done by the 6th
grade families. The fundraisers include the Friday popcorn sales, the
Lakeview nights at Skate King, and more to be determined. Lakeview is the only
public school in the area which offers this program, and it’s one of the
things that makes Lakeview special. Mrs Essig & Ms Keppler (the 6th
grade teachers) continue to do the extra organizational work to make the
program happen, but it has recently been harder to raise money to continue to
offer the program.
Got a question? Send it to the Bulletin, and we’ll try to find
the answer.
