SCHOOL NEWS:

Lakeview grew!

Lakeview increased the number of students from about 430 last year to about 470 this year!  In order to handle all of these new students there have been several changes in staff:  Ms Penton has joined the Lakeview staff to teach first grade; Ms Levinson to teach 2nd grade; Mr. Coulter will now teach 5th grade; Ms Llanes is teaching 3rd grade, and Ms. West will provide extra support for fourth grade classes. We also welcome back Ms Ben-Menachem (formerly Ms Kueckelhan) as our full-time counselor. All classroom spaces are full and portables are also being used. Because of the increased need for space, the computer lab will also be used as a classroom.

The computers have been relocated to create two smaller computer labs of 25 stations. One lab will be upstairs by 5th and 6th grade and one will be down stairs by 2nd grade. All classes will have access to these labs.  Luckily we were able to cancel the order for new computers being funded by PTSA and the money will be refunded to PTSA.  PTSA will hold these designated funds until the next steps for a computer lab are determined.

Lunch recess schedule change

The lunch and lunch recess schedule has changed so that the 2nd, 3rd 4th and 5th grades will have recess before lunch. A research study in Montana has shown that students who eat after recess had higher scores, fewer behavioral problems, and better health (see the front page article in the Kirkland Courier). The new schedule is:

 K, 1        Lunch 11:35-12, Recess 12-12:30

2,3          Recess 12-12:30, Lunch 12:30-12:55

4,5          Recess 11:30-12, Lunch 12-12:25

6              Lunch 12:05-12:30, Recess 12:30-1:00

Friday Popcorn…

The proceeds from popcorn sales help support the 6th grade outdoor education program.  Parents of 6th graders prepare the popcorn and our 6th grade students sell it during recesses.  This year we will be selling popcorn during afternoon recesses on Friday rather than during lunch recesses.  The cost this year will be $ .75 a bag.

Afternoon recesses are as follows:

Grades K-3                          1:50-2:05

Grades 4-6                          2:05-2:25

This year the 6th grade will also host 3 evenings at Skate King.

School Messenger:  One Call Calls them All!
Lake Washington School District will join the ranks of many other school districts across the country when we begin the use of School Messenger. School Messenger is a communications system that will allow us to quickly communicate with all of our parents in a short amount of time via pre-recorded phone messages, alone or in conjunction with e-mail and even text messaging. At least one individual (principal, associate principal, office manager, etc.) from each school has been or will be trained before the start of the school year on how to send a notification message to your families. This system is especially useful in an emergency but can be used to send out general notification messages as well. This system is funded through the 2006 technology levy, which can only be used for technology purposes.

3RD PARTY FLIERS:

The district has introduced a new system for fliers from outside groups, such as the Boys and Girls Club, Studio East, the Kirkland Parks Dept and sports classes and leagues. The district will post the fliers to our school website under  For Parents/Community Bulletin Board. The fliers there currently include information on art, drama, choir, dance, martial arts, and basketball classes.

FUNDRAISING:

Our PTSA budget for 2009-2010 is $106,100. The primary fundraisers planned for the year are:

·         Sally Foster wrapping paper and cookie dough sales (fall)

·         Rummage Sale (spring)

·         Donations from the letter campaign

·         Silent Auction at the Carnival (winter)

Check out the 9 simple ways you can raise money for the school. For example, you (or any family and friends) can register your Target RedCard so that 1% of your purchases comes to the school. Currently, 20 RedCards are registered for Lakeview. Since the start of the program , Target has given the Lakeview PTSA $3260.

ENRICHMENT:

This year the PTSA will be offering after-school classes in chess, art, piano, science and lego club throughout the year. In the winter, we will again be offering the Wednesday after-school ski lessons with bus. We have a few more classes in the works – we’ll publish details as they are finalized. All enrollment forms will be on the website, and printed copies will be sent home in the Friday packet.

HELP NEEDED:

To volunteer in your kids’ classrooms, be sure to sign up on Curriculum Night.

Help still needed for several jobs, including Grant Writers and a Silent Auction Co-Chair, and please return your Volunteer form from the 1st day packet to help us plan the activities for the year.
