- What is Reflections?
- The Reflections Program is a National PTA and Washington State PTA cultural arts competition. The purpose of this program is to provide an opportunity for students to use their creative talents by expressing themselves through their own original works. Each year, Reflections challenges students to create art that supports a specific theme.
A student may submit an entry in any of six arts areas. Only original works of art are accepted. The six art areas are:
Literature -- works of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, prose, drama, short stories and lyrics. Max size 8 1/2"x11". Max length 2000 words. Typed with spell-checker recommended.
Music Composition -- original musical composition, with or without words, a cappella & instrumental (max 5 min.)
Photography -- prints up to 11 x 14 inches in color or black and white, including techniques: photogram, retouched, montage, sandwich and multiple exposure.
Visual Arts -- drawing, painting in tempera, oil, acrylic, watercolor & t-shirt paints, computer generated art, two-dimensional collage, printmaking, needlework & leather tooling. Max size 24"x30", 3/8" thick
Film/Video -- original works, with or without sound, of animation, narrative, documentary, experimental or music video/film. (Only student submitting entry can be director, screenwriter and cameraperson. Max. 5 min.)
Choreography/Dance -- originally choreographed dance composition (recorded on VHS tape or DVD). Up to three dancers with or without choreographer (only one person can be choreographer - Max. 5 min.)
Participation in Reflections is organized by student age and grade levels. Student works are critiqued against others in the same grade division. This allows recognition and judging of artworks by appropriate developmental age and skill levels. The grade divisions are:
Primary -- Preschool - Grade 2
Intermediate -- Grades 3 - 5
Middle/Junior -- Grades 6 - 8
Entries are judged on creative ability and interpretation of the theme. The Reflections Program is structured for PTAs to recognize students at the local, council, state, and national levels. Entries are first judged at the local level and selected works are chosen to represent the PTA at each subsequent level. Lakeview can send 25 entries on the Lake Washington Council.
- Why encourage my child to participate?
- All entries will be recognized. As soon as an entry is received, the student’s name will go up on a school participant bulletin board. All participants will receive a certificate and will be recognized at a student assembly.
Twenty-five finalists will be selected from the participants, and their entries will be sent on to the Lake Washington PTSA Council. These finalists will receive an award of achievement, a special gift, and their entries will be honored by a ceremony at the LE Scarr Resource Center in Redmond.
- How can my child enter?
- Encourage them to enter their original work in any of the six categories. There is no cost to entering the competition. The rules for the categories can be found on the magazine rack in the school lobby, or under "Reflections" on the Washington state PTA website.
An entry form must be completed and attached for each and every entry. All portions of the form must be filled in, including both student and parent signatures. Entries can be turned in at the front desk of the school.
