Academics
Building a successful community of students, by providing a quality education.

Our School Improvement Goals
All Washington schools develop a Continuous Improvement Plan (CIP) which is mandated by the state and includes: a review of state, district and classroom data and specific strategies which will be implemented to promote continued student academic and social growth.

The staff meets every Wednesday afternoon and twice a month before school. They are divided into cross grade level work teams focused on literacy and social studies; math and science; school and behavior. These teams look at performance data from the WASL, district tests, class assessments, and building data; discuss best practices that will improve student performance; and then determine what our next steps need to be. Our data from last year was strong and showed improvements so we are continuing and deepening many of the strategies we used successfully last year.

We also are focusing on how to challenge each student. To do this we will be: defining the learning targets for the lesson (look for the “I can, I know, I use, etc . . . “ statements that start learning targets); assessing if students learned what we had planned for them to learn (the learning target); and then what we need to do if they still don’t understand or if they already know the information or have the skill.  This process we call defining learning targets and using common assessments across the grade level to guide instruction and interventions. Each grade level team has set goals for academic achievement in the areas of reading, writing, math and science. The cross grade level work teams are also determining what classroom and district data we need to gather to monitor our progress toward our goals.

Assessment
Information about student learning is gathered from a variety of sources, including district and state assessments, and from the classroom teacher. Though assessments are important in helping teachers work more effectively with your child, they only provide part of the total picture of your child’s progress. Teachers assess student performance in a variety of ways on a regular basis, and their insights to your child continue to be your best source of information on "how your child is doing".

DIBELS
The DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills) is a test used to assess reading proficiency in kindergarten through second grade.

State Testing
Beginning in the 2009-10 school year, the Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL) will be replaced by two new tests: the Measurements of Student Progress (MSP) in grades 3-8 and the High School Proficiency Exam (HSPE). In addition, the MSP will be piloted online in spring 2010 in grades 6-8 in reading and math. More Information
