Teaching and Curriculum
Professional educators help children achieve personal and academic excellence.
The curriculum, standards and assessments adopted by the Lake Washington School District shape the learning experience for students at Lakeview.
- Power Standards
- Power Standards help teachers focus and prioritize what is most important for students to know and be able to do in the time available for teaching and learning. Of the state Grade Level Equivalents (GLEs), Power Standards are the ones that best represent the key skills, concepts and processes mastered at a given grade level. Power Standards create the framework for teaching and learning.
-
- The Framework
- The Teaching and Learning Framework creates a student-centered learning environment that allows students a guaranteed and viable curriculum.
Teaching Materials
- Each year committees of teachers who are subject matter experts review standards, teaching practices and materials to teach with. Our goal is to provide the most up-to-date, research based and appropriate materials for children.
-
- Grade Level Expectations
- Grade Level Expectations (GLEs) provide detail about what students should know and be able to do by grade level. GLEs are aligned from kindergarten through grade 10 – so that parents, students and educators can see how skills and knowledge build from year to year.
Math Curriculum The LWSD has provided resources and tools to help parents understand the math curriculum at each grade level. Information for each unit includes the mathematical emphasis, tips for helping at home, vocabulary defined, strategies, and sample activities to try at home.
In addition to following the Lake Washington School District's curriculum, we integrate FastMath and Math Facts in a Flash into our yearly curriculum. Math Facts in a Flash is a district-approved, supplemental software program that helps give students valuable practice on addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts. It also provides practice on other mental math skills, including squares and fraction/decimal conversion. The FastMath software program is as a computational fluency program designed to build speed and accuracy with addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts. It is a supplemental, district-approved program that is fun and motivational for our third and fourth grade students. Their goal is to work on their facts through Fastmath three times a week, as well as practice computation in their daily Investigations lessons. Lakeview also utilizes a Math Lab which contains educational games that can be checked out. Students play these games to reinforce math skills and cooperative group skills. Teachers are able to explain the rules/strategies to the whole class and then let the kids play in small groups.
Chess in the Classroom (2nd and 3rd graders)
Lakeview PTSA coordinates a professionally designed, standards-based curriculum supplement utilizing the game of chess. Chess is used as a learning tool to teach higher-level thinking skills, improve math and reading skills, and build self-esteem in students.
- Field Science Education for Sixth Graders
- Lakeview sixth graders have a great opportunity to explore the rainforest and beach environments, study plants/animals/geology, do some hiking, and get to know one another out of the school setting. Lakeview staff accompanies the students to the Olympic Park Institute (O.P.I.), which sits in the national park near Port Angeles.
-
- The students will focus on a wide area of study. Science study areas include: land and water, ecosystems, weather patterns, food chains/food webs, ecology/geology/earth science, environmental influences, and waste management. In preparation for seventh grade, they will study bio-diversity and classification of the systems/kingdoms of plants and animals. Social studies topics include: effects of economy on environment (National Park, logging, fishing, wolves, energy) and Pacific Rim issues (old growth forests, logging, current events). In addition to the sciences, students will use their persuasive/expository writing, speaking skills and team-building skills.
-
- To make this trip possible, there are fundraising efforts throughout the year to meet the total trip cost of approximately $17,000. The cost includes the entrance fee for sixty 6th graders/6 chaperones, subs for any teachers if needed, charter buses, scholarships for students, ferry fee, gas, and supplies. Fundraising efforts include Skate King Night (3) and weekly popcorn sales. Other fundraising opportunities may be chosen if additional funds are needed. Funds provided by the PTSA ($600) and these fundraising efforts offset the cost of the field trip; leaving a cost of $210 per student. Please contact Megyn Essig with questions. O.P.I Web site. - Technology in the Classroom
- Lakeview uses technology in the classroom on a daily basis to enhance the education of our students. Every day teachers and students utilize many technology tools such as Activboards, Activotes, document cameras, and digital cameras. We have a variety of programs that support individual and collaborative student learning in the classroom and in the Computer Lab. Technology is integrated into teaching and learning based on six basic standards.
- Creativity and Innovation
- Communication and Collaboration
- Research and Information Fluency
- Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, and Decision Making
- Digital Citizenship
- Technology Operations and Concepts
Some of the networked programs utilized are:
- STAR Reading - Determines the reading level of each student, measures individual and class growth
- Accelerated Reader - Personalized reading practice for each student's current reading level
- FastMath and Math Facts in a Flash - Assures mastery of math facts and computational fluency
- Type to Learn - Keyboarding instruction and practice which emphasizes both accuracy and speed
- Headsprout - K-2 supplemental, online program that promotes reading success for every child
- Microsoft Office - Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
- Special Education and Safety Net Programs
- If you would like information regarding remedial or learning disability assistance, please contact Principal Linda Hughes (lihughes@lwsd.org) at 425.822.4517.
Big and Little Buddies
Throughout Lakeview, buddy classes have paired up to give older students a chance to work with younger students, and younger students get to know our older students. During classroom time, activities are scheduled to foster relationships between the younger and older students. These activities include: reading to each other, playing games, making an art project together. |
