- Lakeview sixth graders have a great opportunity to explore the rainforest and beach environments, study plants/animals/geology, do some hiking, and get to know one another out of the school setting. Lakeview staff accompanies the students to the Olympic Park Institute (O.P.I.), which sits in the national park near Port Angeles.
The students will focus on a wide area of study. Science study areas include: land and water, ecosystems, weather patterns, food chains/food webs, ecology/geology/earth science, environmental influences, and waste management. In preparation for seventh grade, they will study bio-diversity and classification of the systems/kingdoms of plants and animals. Social studies topics include: effects of economy on environment (National Park, logging, fishing, wolves, energy) and Pacific Rim issues (old growth forests, logging, current events). In addition to the sciences, students will use their persuasive/expository writing, speaking skills and team-building skills. To make this trip possible, there are fundraising efforts throughout the year to meet the total trip cost of approximately $14,000. The cost includes the entrance fee for 65- 6th graders/6+ teacher chaperones, subs for teachers if needed, charter buses, scholarships for students, ferry fee, gas, and supplies. Fundraising efforts include weekly popcorn sales, coffee sales throughout the year and any other events planned by parents to raise funds. In the past the student fee has been $210 per student, but this could change due to needs seen. Please contact head organizer Dori West with questions or concerns. |
