Model United Nations (aka, “Model UN”) is a simulation of the United Nations that aims to educate participants about civics, effective communication, human rights, globalization and multilateral diplomacy. In Model UN, students take on roles as foreign diplomats and debate international issues in simulated conferences modeled after the United Nations Participants research a country, investigate international issues, debate proposals and amendments, deliberate wording and concepts, consult colleagues, coordinate positions, and then develop solutions to world problems. During a simulation, participants employ a variety of communication and critical thinking skills in order to represent the policies of their country. These skills include public speaking, small group communications, research, policy analysis, active listening, negotiating, conflict resolution, note taking, and technical writing. At ICS, the Model UN club meets every Thursday after school in Mr. Bach’s room to prepare for the annual conference, which is often held at the University of Washington campus in April. All members are also invited to attend the Vancouver Model United Nations conference in January, which is held in Vancouver, B.C. Students choose their countries and committees, and research their position papers. Model UN is open to students in the 9-12th grades.
