Model United Nations (aka, “Model UN”) is a simulation of the United Nations that aims to educate participants about civics, effective communication, globalization and multilateral diplomacy. In Model UN, students take on roles as foreign diplomats and participate in a simulated session of an intergovernmental organization (IGO). Participants research a country, investigate international issues, debate proposals and amendments, deliberate wording and concepts, consult colleagues, coordinate positions, and then develop solutions to world problems. During a simulation, participants employ a variety of communication and critical thinking skills in order to represent the policies of their country.
These skills include public speaking, small group communications, research, policy analysis, active listening, negotiating, conflict resolution, note taking, and technical writing. At ICS, the Model UN club meets weekly to prepare for the annual conference, which is often held at the University of Washington campus in April. Students choose their countries and committees, and research their position papers. Model UN is open to students in the 9-12th grades, and in 2008, there were nineteen students participating.
