Key points of National History, Culminating Projects, Focus Week, and Ignite

 Culminating Project (CP)

Each senior spends more than forty hours creating and accomplishing a culminating project which he or she will present to a panel of staff and students in the spring. This is an opportunity for each student to find a focus that is significant to them in which they will immerse themselves during their final year at ICS. It is through this project that the student will demonstrate his or her finest planning, management, and presentation skills. This is where they show the true depth of their independent study. This is where the hallmarks of ICS students--strong leadership and grasp of knowledge--is demonstrated for the upcoming classes. Check Web site calendar for dates.

 Focus Week

Focus Week (FW) excursions are week-long, teacher led adventures in which students explore concepts outside those covered in the classroom. Whether traveling to distant shores such as Greece, Paris, or Colonial American battlefields or enjoying a local excursion such as Spanish cooking or Salish Sea exploration, students have the opportunity to delve deeper into and forge a stronger understanding of a topic that can transform their lives.  The lessons and the memories last a lifetime.

 National History Day (NHD)

Every 8th grade student at ICS participates in National History Day.  Students learn firsthand the value of studying one subject in great depth. Impressive research and meticulous documentation becomes transformed into a dazzling display of skills mastery and learning. Award-winning ICS topics have included Henry VIII's court, the Lowell Mill Girls, the obscenity trial of Allen Ginsberg, the colonization of the Congo, the Tonkin Gulf Incident, and many others. Students learn the benefits of individual research and group participation.

 Ignite

ICS devotes a significant amount of time to helping student leaders learn the skills they need to help younger students become strong community members. These leadership skills and the community strength that develops through a structured approach all add to the academic experience. Students meet with their assigned peer group for coaching and then use their skills with younger students.
