The goal of Family Learning Center is to provide a variety of academic and enrichment classes to assist the home schooling parent. Family Learning Center serves students in grades K-12. In keeping with our original design of providing resources in both core and enrichment areas, the Family Learning Center currently offers over 100 classes a week that are balanced in both the enrichment and basic skills areas using the Lake Washington School District curriculum frameworks as a guide. In addition to classes, we offer a high school diploma program and an ongoing array of other services to parents and students outlined more extensively in our handbook.
Family Learning Center operates as an Alternative Learning Experience Program under WAC 392-121-182. Our program requires that students in Kindergarten are on site at least 2.5 hours a week of supervised instruction and the completion of additional hours of instruction at home. Full time students in Grades 1-12 are on site for a minimum of 5 hours a week of supervised instruction and the completion of additional hours of instruction at home. Students may enroll on a part time basis.
The generic term for this type of school is a Parent Partnership Program (PPP). The LWSD is in partnership with the parent to provide instruction to students. Students only attend classes one or two days a week, so it is important that parents carry out the remainder of the student’s instructional hours at home.
Students are enrolled in a Lake Washington School District alternative program, not home schooling under Washington’s Home Based Instruction law. A “Written Student Learning Plan” is completed for each student enrolled in the Family Learning Center. The plans are developed with the supervision of a certified teacher using the Lake Washington School District Curriculum Frameworks and are monitored on a monthly basis to insure that students are making adequate progress towards their learning goals and objectives. Plans are revised as needed to ensure student progress.
Our High School program for students in Grades 9-12 offers a series of core classes including Math, English, History, and Science. There are also electives such as Foreign Languages and Art. All seniors enrolled in the Family Learning Center wanting a LWSD diploma must meet the graduation requirements set by the District including completion of a culminating project and passage of the WASL. In addition, many of our high school students choose to attend Running Start, NEVAC and other programs that further enrich their high school experience.
