Bookworms Named Champions of the 2008 Global Reading Challenge
Congratulations to the Bookworms, from Explorer/Dickinson Elementary, for their victory at the Global Reading Challenge final championship. From the school competition, to the district, to the regional and finally the tie-breaking round of the championships, the Bookworms defeated 205 teams to claim their title.
Clearly there was a lot of work behind the scenes to achieve such success. Each team had to read 10 books collectively and answer open-ended comprehension questions on the content. Questions were repeated once and answers by team consensus had to be delivered in 30 seconds.
The Challenge is a partnership between the King County Library System and the school districts designed to encourage students at all reading levels to engage in teamwork while reading some of the best in children’s literature.
The Bookworms received gold medals and a trophy at the championships. Additionally, at the Regional competition, they received signed copies of Linda Johns’ book Hannah West and the Belltown Towers. Linda personally shared the things that inspire her while allowing the Bookworms to attempt to stump her with their questions.
