Explorer Enrollment

Any family that lives in the Lake Washington School District may apply for admission to the Explorer Community School.

First grade applicants will be selected randomly from a lottery of all interested and eligible families. Families interested in applying for 1st grade of 2010/2011 are required to attend Information Night on Thursday, January 14th from 7:00PM-8:00PM, at which time they will receive an application.

Applicants for second through sixth grade are placed on a wait list based on the date the enrollment form is received. A completed enrollment form will place your student on the Explorer Community School waitlist. Complete the application for enrollment and mail it to the Enrollment Coordinator, Explorer Community School, 7040 208th Ave. NE, Redmond, WA 98053.

Enrollment night is Thursday January 14th, 7:00PM-8:00PM at the Emily Dickinson Commons.

To contact the Enrollment Coordinator, please leave a message on the school answering machine at (425) 836-6652 or e-mail your question and phone number to explorer-enroll@hotmail.com and a parent volunteer will return your call/e-mail as soon as possible.

Siblings of current ECS students continue to have priority for placement over new applicants.

Application Process

  1. For all applicants, attendance at the annual Information Night in January is required.
  2. First grade applications are obtained at the Information Night and must be completed and returned by the deadline announced at the Information Night.
  3. Applicants must attend a group tour of the school to be eligible for enrollment. A sign up sheet will be available at Information Night to select from several different times to attend. (Tours are for parents/guardians only, new students will have opportunities to meet teachers and classmates after placement.)
  4. Lottery and waitlist placement will be announced by the first week of April.
  5. Once the first grade lottery drawing has occurred, applicants will retain their assigned place on the wait list. As openings occur, they will be offered to the next applicant at the top of the list. This list will remain intact through grade 6. If an applicant accepts a position at another choice school in LWSD, they must notify Explorer’s enrollment coordinator who will remove their name from the waiting list. At this time, the applicant can reapply and be added to the bottom of the wait list. Families that apply after the lottery has occurred and the wait list has been created will be added to the bottom of the wait list in chronological order.

  6. Families with multiple same-age applicants must enter the lottery as individuals. If all same-age applicants are placed on the waitlist, their names will appear in the order they were drawn through the lottery. If only one of the same-age applicants is granted admission and attends Explorer the following fall, the same-age sibling/s will move to Explorer’s priority list for siblings.
