What are the application requirements?

The application process has three required elements.

1. Parent attendance at DCS Information Night
2. Parent attendance at a one hour classroom observation
3. Mail, fax, or bring the following 3 completed application forms to the DCS office:

Due dates for the 2008-2009 school year:
DCS Information Night will occur on Tuesday, January 13, 2009 at 6:30 p.m. Join us to learn about Discovery Community School. Attendance is required for anyone applying to Discovery Community School (parents only please.) Meeting will be held in the lower building. Enter at the main entrance to Carl Sandburg. Classroom observations are scheduled at Information Night. A classroom observation must be completed by Tuesday, February 3, 2009. Application forms must be submitted before the classroom observation begins.

Sibling Policy
DCS philosophy calls for the integration of family involvement into the child's school experience. As a practical matter, the involvement of families with multiple elementary students is best supported when elementary-grade siblings are in the same school. Thus, DCS enrollment policy provides preference in first grade admission to students who will attend DCS concurrently with a previously admitted sibling.

Lottery
Admission to remaining 1st grade openings will be determined by a lottery for eligible children who have completed the application requirements.

• The lottery will be conducted on Friday, February 6, 2009.
• All families will be contacted by February 9, 2009.
• Prospective families must notify DCS of their plans to accept or decline an opening by February 26, 2009.

Once all positions have been filled, remaining applicants will be placed on a waitlist.

What if I miss the due dates?
Applicants that have missed the due dates will be placed at the end of a waitlist in the order that their classroom observations and application forms are completed.

For 2nd through 6th Grade Admission

Applications are accepted throughout the school year. The application form and a one-hour classroom observation are required. Applicants are admitted in waitlist order as space allows.
