What Does a School Counselor Do?
-Responds to student needs in crisis situation
-Conducts conferences with parents
-Consults with teachers, administrators and other professionals
-Provides community resources and training opportunities
-Counsels individuals and small groups of students
-Teaches Steps to Respect, Second Step, Kelso’s Choices and Talking About Touching
-Participates in planning, implementing and evaluating a comprehensive developmental guidance and counseling program.
-Participates actively in the referral process of students to special programs and/or services and agencies inside and outside the school
-Provides staff and parent training
What do counselors teach in the classroom?
-Self confidence development (value uniqueness, manage feelings)
-Motivation to achieve (develop academic potential, identify career opportunities)
-Decision making, goal setting, problem solving
-Interpersonal effectiveness (respect others, develop healthy friendships)
