Halloween is a big party for us at Community School. The Olders have the responsibility of transforming their room appropriately for the occasion. The transformation usually requires blacked out windows and lots of duct tape, and it provides great entertainment value to those that visit the room during the school party. Parents provide a variety of fun activites and treats that keep us busy all morning. We all wear costumes in the spirit of the day (no violent or extremely scary themes).
Ginger Bread Houses is an all-school exception to our strict snack policy. Parents provide innumerable treats for children to decorate gingerbread houses that they each construct as they see fit. The creativity and sugar flows high on this final day of school before Winter
Break.
Secret Pal Gift Exchange is an all-day event for our school. Several weeks of written anonymous clues and wild guesses leads up to the exchange of home-made gifts. The gifts are made especially for a secret pal that each child randomly selected weeks before the exchange, and the cost of materials for the gifts is limited to $5 or less. We all get to know each other better over the two weeks that lead up to the event, which we usually hold on Valentine's Day.
