Technology
Lake Washington School District is a nationally recognized leader in using technology in the classroom and has been for the last two decades.  Blackwell Elementary uses technology on a daily basis to enhance the education of our students.

Technology at Blackwell:

Every day teachers and students utilize many technology tools such as Activboards, Activotes, document cameras, and digital cameras, We have a variety of programs that support individual and collaborative student learning. Intermediate students also have the ability to store information under their own profile and use their own district email account. Technology is integrated into teaching and learning based on six basic standards. (ISTE)

1. Creativity and Innovation
2. Communication and Collaboration
3. Research and Information Fluency
4. Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, and Decision Making
5. Digital Citizenship
6. Technology Operations and Concepts

Computers: We have a computer lab with 30 student computers, a portable laptop lab with 30 computers, 15 student computers in the library, and student computers in every classroom or mini-lab between classrooms.

Netbooks: Student have access to netbooks on a 1:3 ratio throughout Blackwell.  Third grade students have a 1:1 ratio since the third grade teachers wrote a grant and piloted the netbook program for two years prior to district program implementation.

Get Tech-Fit: Every other year students learn how to be "Tech-Fit."  This nationally recognized program originated here at Blackwell in 2000.  These valuable ergonomic lessons integrate health, physical education, technology, research and reading skills.  Ergonomics is the study of how we work, how we make our way through the day, balancing the abilities and limitations of our bodies.  If we understand that there are choices in how we use the tools we have (or consider modifying the tool or the space) our bodies will be better off for it.   Mr. Hutchison teaches lessons in the gym and will also be sending home information with students so that they can analyze the weight and effectiveness of their backpacks. Mrs. Pazaski shares stories, teaches lessons, and helps the students with research in the library. The lessons focus primarily on the way kids use computers since most children love to use them yet they don’t think about negative side effects to using them improperly, and they are an integral tool for learning and living. Ergonomics certainly applies to gaming, mobile devices, and non-electronic tasks, as well.  Although “Get Tech-Fit” will be taught specifically for a week, every other year, ergonomics is something that is integrated throughout instruction on an ongoing basis.
