The AG Bell library is not only a place to find books, magazines and research materials, but it is also a classroom. Primary age classes meet weekly for 30 minutes. Intermediate classes meet every other week for one hour. The LWSD library curriculum is taught and student effort in library class is reported on the LWSD report card.
The library effort grade is based on:
1. Active participation – Students are expected to focus on and engage in the class activity each time they come to class.
2. Following directions and staying on-task – Our class time is limited, so students need to follow directions immediately and stay on task during our lessons to get as much accomplished as possible.
3. Using check out time well – I believe that knowing how to find and check out books is a life-skill that students will need during their school years and beyond. Students are expected to self-select items they are interested in reading. It is their assignment each time they come to class. Students are given 10-15 minutes of check out time to select and check out books during each class period. Students who are not able to check out because they have reached their limit in check outs or have overdue books are expected to read something quietly during check out time.
4. Completing assignments – Homework is rarely given in library class. However, students are expected to complete their written assignments or performance of library skill assignments during class time. Sometimes students will be asked to finish up something that they didn’t complete in class. Students may use the library during recess to work on class assignments.
5. Being responsible – Students are expected to take care of the materials they use in the library and check out to take home. They need to return books on time as well.

Behavior Expectations
All students are expected to respect the library and school rules during class. If students are having difficulty following the library classroom rules, the following “Power of Three” procedures are applied:
- A reminder with eye contact, physical proximity and/or verbal contact.
- If the behavior continues, the student will receive another reminder and may be moved to another place in the library for the remainder of class. A note will made in Mrs.Hembree’s grade book.
- If the behavior still continues, the student will be asked to leave the classroom, and sit out the remainder of the class in the office. A note will be made in Mrs. Hembree’s grade book.
