Music Program
Welcome to the Music Class page! Here we will post news from the Music Room of Ms. Baker. Find out what the students have been learning in Music class and other interesting Music info. Thanks for helping Alcott students become lifelong enjoyers of Music!

   Music Notes

Check out this great 60 minutes story about a classical orchestra in the African country of Congo….such a strong story about the power of music and the lengths people will go to participate.  INSPIRING!

As we are entering our final semester, students are continuing to live up to the expectations in the Music classroom and to remember to make good choices for themselves and their classmates.  Students are graded according to the Lake Washington School District rubric for specialist classes for the level of effort they put forth while in the Music classroom.  Students’ music grades are effort based only.  The Alcott Music Report Card rubric can be found at the end of this section.

The “Dance Dude” is coming this May, so we will have another Dance Unit Taught by “The Dance Dude”.  Classes met in the gym for combined lessons. Assisting the “Dude” will be Ms. Baker, PE Teachers Mr. Laughlin and Mr. Rabitoy and Music teacher Miss Keller.

Units that have been completed are The Orchestra for the 4th graders, The Ear – Education on listening to Music while keeping your hearing for 5th graders, A Cappella music for the 6th grades, and listening quilts for 1-3rd grades.  This is where we listen to a piece of music and answer questions with artwork.  You should see them coming home.  We are beginning recorders for 3/4 and 4th grades and baritone ukulele for 5th and 6th grades at this time.

If you are ever wondering whether or not Musical studies are important for your child’s whole education – just stop by and read the bulletin board next in the Music room hallway.  There is much research to be read that supports Music  in the development of students, as touched on by these videos on the subject:

Thank you for your continued support of Music and the Arts!
Remember in this cold weather while we are waiting for Spring, singing                            warms your heart!  J
