New Teacher Grants:  In September the Foundation awarded $200 each to 54 new teachers in the district.  Kelly Kursteiner from the district tell us “New teachers spend a great deal of money out of their own pocket trying to get classrooms set up and ready to welcome their students the first day of school.  I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard a new teacher say how thankful they were to receive this $200 grant money to relieve the financial burden of preparing their classroom.  The foundation is such a blessing to our new teachers!” 

LINKS, Looking into the Needs of Kids and Schools is a volunteer and mentoring program that started as a grassroots program of the Lake Washington School District PTSA in 2004.  It was adopted by the District in the 2008-09 school year, with funding provided by the Foundation.  We are proud to see it become a fully-funded program for 2009-10, with grants obtained through the Foundation’s Grantwriting Committee from both private and public organizations.  LINKS now has 63 volunteers and has many more requests for mentors and volunteers at schools throughout the district.  To find out more, go to www.lwsd.org/links. 

Our Classroom and School Enrichment Grant applications have been received and are being reviewed by community volunteers.  Stay tuned for an announcement in mid-November on the grants awarded.
