What is Reading Recognition?
Reading Recognition is a PTA-sponsored program that promotes reading at all grade levels and abilities. It’s great for students who struggle with reading as well as for those who excel and want to read more.
How does it work?
Reading Recognition is based on the "Accelerated Reader" computer program. Students can choose from a list of nearly book titles; each book on the list has an assigned grade level and point value.
Once the student has read a chosen book, one of the school computers are used to take a short, multiple-choice quiz about the book. Points are earned based on the percentage of correct answers. Quizzes will be available to take twice per week. Each grade level has a point goal to successfully complete the program.
Many of the books are in our school library. However, you may also make use of the public library in order to access some titles. Now is a great time to help your student get a library card and learn how to check out books from the library.
Are there incentives?
Yes! At the halfway point in the program, students who have earned half of the points required will be recognized. At the end of the year, those students completing the entire program will receive a Borders gift card.
When does it start and end?
Students will receive information packets once they have signed up. The computer lab will be open for quiz taking beginning in early October. The program will end in early May.
Do we need volunteers?
Yes!! This program depends on volunteers to supervise the after school computer lab sessions. This is a fun and easy volunteer job and we will show you how the program works.
