FIRST Lego League to start at Rockwell in September 2009!
Is your child going into 4th, 5th or 6th grade? Does your child like to build with legos and is interested in robotics? Would a “team challenge” be something that interests them? Well, go to www.usfirst.org/community/fll to learn more about FIRST Lego League. Cathy Dietz and Siri Bliesner, two Rockwell parents, along with Debbie Ward, Rockwell tech staff, will be coaching two teams for up to 20 Rockwell students. Starting in September, we will be meeting twice a week after-school to tackle the “Smart Move 2009” challenge provided to us by FIRST. For the next three months, the kids will program Lego Mindstorm robots to do specific tasks related to transportation issues and research local issues related to transportation. In December, they will compete with other teams in a regional event at Bellevue Community College where their robot will need to perform all the tasks and they will need to present the results of their research.
It costs about $100 per participant to run the program (registration fees, Lego Mindstorms to do the challenge, other necessary supplies). Due to the need to “hit the ground running”, we are currently taking registration deposits for participants to hold spots for the fall. Registration will be on a first-come, first-served basis and we will have to limit the number to no more than 20 participants. If your child is interested in participating, please fill out the Lego League Registration form and return it to the Rockwell office with a deposit of $50.
