SCHOOL and PTSA NEWS

SCHOOL PARKING LOT ALERT!!!

We need your help!!!  The traffic flow in the upper parking lot in the afternoon is creating a safety concern and a problem for staff and parents who are trying to exit our upper parking lot.

Here is how we need you to help:

*---Walk your child to school or have them take the bus.

*---Use the lower pick-up area off State Street if possible.

*---Please only use the upper lot pickup area if you do not need to leave your car, and if your child is expecting to meet you there. This area is for quick pick-ups only.  Please only park in designated parking spaces. In particular, do not double park anywhere or parallel park in the walking lane to the right of the driving lane. In order to help everyone exit the lot quickly, we must maintain a clear through traffic lane, separate from the pick-up lane. If you are coming to pick-up, please yield to cars leaving the lot behind the school, as they will not need to stop in the pick-up lane. To keep traffic flowing in front of the school, the principal or a volunteer may be out at that corner (near the garbage dumpster) allowing cars to move to the front drop off area  as there is space so that all cars can exit more smoothly.

THANKS FOR YOUR HELP!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lakeview Improvement Plan (CIP): Schools are involved in a continuous improvement cycle where they are in a constant process of evaluating student performance and determining the next steps for improvements.  The Lakeview staff has been busy this fall pulling together and analyzing testing data and statistics for 2009 in order to develop their plan for 2010.  Principal Hughes will share the staff's plan for 2010 on December 3 at 6:30. You are invited to attend to hear about the school's plan, ask questions, and provide your feedback.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Holiday Gift and Meal Resources: During this difficult economic time, many families are facing financial hardship.  If you or someone you know is in need of support this holiday season, there are several organizations that offer confidential support to families in need.  Please see here if you are interested in learning about local holiday gift and meal resources for your family.  In addition to this list you may also find additional resources by calling 206-461-3200 or 211 (enter “1” for Holiday Assistance).

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Book Fair:  OH COME, ALL YE SHOPPERS!

The Book Fair is about to begin, just in time for holiday shopping!  The fair will be open these hours:

  • Monday, November 30:  11:45 am to 5:00 pm
  • Tuesday, December 1:  11:45 am to 7:00 pm
  • Wednesday, December 2:  11:45 am to 5:00 pm
  • Thursday, December 3:  11:45 am to 4:00 pm

The book fair features Scholastic books and products and is the major fundraiser for the library. Adults are welcome to stop by the library to shop during book fair hours, and students may shop during their lunch recess or after school. Cash, checks and credit cards are all accepted.

Finish your gift list early with books for children, youth, and adults, as well as a selection of games, toys, and stocking stuffers.  Any questions?  Contact Jennifer Georges, librarian, 425/822-4517,  -or Kathleen Castleberry, 425/691-7104.

 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Winter Wishes: Winter Wish tags will be available in the school lobby starting tomorrow (11/20). If you’d like to allow your child to pick out a Winter Wish to fulfill, please fill out this info and authorization form, and send it in to school with them. Or, stop by the lobby with them, and you can pick out a Wish tag together.

The Wish tags benefit Lakeview families in need, and will be available until December 4th.  There will be a collection box in the school lobby to collect the purchased Wish items. Please bring the items (unwrapped) to school on or before December 9th, 2009 so they can be delivered in time for the holidays. Thanks!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lunch Recess Math Clubs: This was the first week of the math clubs for grades 1-4. Through the wet season, each grade will have a day on which they may come to the 3rd grade shared space to play math games during lunch recess.  No signup is needed.  The schedule is:  Mondays- 1st grade: 12:00-12:30; Tuesdays-2nd grade: 12:00-12:30; Wednesdays- 3rd grade: 12:00-12:30; Thursdays- 4th grade: 11:30-12:00. Check with your child to see if they came this week, and to hear what game they played.

If you’d like to help supervise, please contact Ms. Nease (hnease@lwsd.org) or just show up during a timeslot.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

District PTSA Scholarship Basket Auction:  The Lake Washington PTSA Council invites you to participate in the Scholarship Basket Auction at the LWSD Resouce Center lobby in Redmond Town Center. Silent bidding has already begun, and will end on December 3rd at 11:30am. You do not need to be present to win! All proceeds provide scholarships to our graduating seniors.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lakeview Leopard Coffee: The 6th grade is still taking orders for delicious Lakeview Leopard Fresh Roasted Coffee, produced for us by a local gourmet roaster (we can’t say who – but it tastes great!).  This is a 6th grade fundraiser for their OPI trip in spring.

Pre-order your coffee, and it will be delivered soon after on a Friday to your child. One pound bags are $13; choices include whole bean or ground, in Regular, Decaf or Espresso blends.  What a great gift for the holidays! Paper copies of the order form are in the school lobby, or get it here.  Any questions, please contact Shelley McKee at daveshell@verizon.net.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Passport Club:  The study map for November is in the school lobby and on the web here (the password is always Leopard). A blank study map is here, and the list of locations is here. Please note that the maps and locations for each month are different, and all students begin at level 1 each month.  The next check days are Dec 8 and 9 (with makeups/retests on Dec 14). Want to be a passport checker?  Email emily@brianandemily.com.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lakeview T-shirts:  Shirts and bag orders went home with kids last Friday  If you have any questions regarding your order after you have received it please let me know via email @ cheryle_elder@comcast.net – please reference Lakeview shirts in the subject line.

There were a few orders that did not have any identification on them and if you think that you ordered shirts/bags please send me an email and I can help determine if the order might be yours.

For those of you who wish you ordered bags or need an extra one or two, we have about 20 bags left.  They are $5 each.  If you email me, I can get them to you via kid mail. cheryle_elder@comcast.net

All of us from the PTSA hope you enjoy your shirts and bags!  -

Cheryle Elder, Shelley Swanson  (a big thanks to Joyce St. Clair for helping out on putting the orders together!)

Quest: The Quest Elementary Program for Highly Capable Students (Grades 1-6) will accept applications for the 2010-2011 school year until 4 p.m. on November 30, 2009.

The Elementary Quest program offers two options for students who demonstrate superior ability, who exceed grade level standards in literacy and math, and who exhibit exceptional creativity in the classroom. Full time students are enrolled in an accelerated, self-contained classroom for the full day, five days a week. Enrichment Pull-Out students attend their home school four days a week and a pull-out enrichment classroom one day a week.

More information can be found in the Quest Information packet that will be available at all elementary schools, on the Quest Web site (www.lwsd.org/quest), and at the Quest Office on the third floor of the Resource Center (425-702-3238; Quest@lwsd.org).

ADVOCACY (Neicole Crepeau)

FOCUS (ON KIDS) DAY SET FOR JANUARY 18TH

Washington State PTA’s annual Focus Day is on Martin Luther King Day this year!  Bring your children so they can see their government first hand, learn about how legislation is made, and also have some fun. At the same time, their presence will help reinforce our message to legislators early in the session that all of Washington’s children should be the focus of their efforts.  Plan now to come to Olympia, and join hundreds of PTA members from all across the state.

As Lakeview parents, we'll be coordinating to go together to Focus Day. Expect your kids to ask you whether they get to go to the party!

We'll be sending more information in the next month.

ENRICHMENT (Jenny Carlson)

Friday Art Class??:  We’re considering offering an after-school art class on Fridays for 8-12 year olds starting in January.  The class would be taught by Art For Kids (www.artforkidsschool.com), which also teaches at Lakeview on Wednesday afternoons. We need to know now if there is enough interest to run the class.  Please email lakptsaenrichment@gmail.com ASAP if you have a potential student.

(Please note:  class chaperones are required for all enrichment classes beginning in January.  Families enrolling students in any after school classes may be asked to volunteer for a class or two, depending on enrollment.)
