Five Habits of Mind

It is important to think critically so that you can be an effective user of information. Practice applying these questions to every information source you use.

1. Evidence: How do we know what we know? What evidence counts? How sure can we be? What makes it credible to us?

2. Viewpoint: From whose viewpoint are we seeing/hearing this information?

3. Connections: Is there a pattern? Have we seen something like this before? What are the possible consequences?

4. Supposition: How could it have been otherwise? What if...? This habit requires use of the imagination as well as knowledge of alternative possibilities.

5. Relevance/Significance: Does it matter? Who cares?
