Any family that lives in the Lake Washington School District may apply for admission to the Explorer Community School.
MANDATORY SCHOOL TOURS – the deadline to sign up for a tour has passed.
New applicants and those desiring to maintain a waitlist spot MUST attend a school tour.
INFORMATION NIGHT
Students will be selected randomly from a lottery held at the district office of all eligible applicants. Families interested in applying for the 2013/2014 school year are invited to attend an Information Night on Thursday, January 10, 2013 at 6:30 p.m. Attendance at this evening information night is highly encouraged to learn about the level of parent participation required while attending Explorer.
Following the information night presentation, you will have the opportunity to sign up for a school tour which is mandatory for new applicants and to maintain spots on our waiting list. We are unable to offer childcare; therefore this is an adult only evening.
LOTTERY
The lottery will be held at the Lake Washington School District (LWSD) office on February 1, 2013. Following the lottery, 2nd through 5th-grade applicants will be added to the existing waiting list in the order of their lottery drawing.
APPLICATION PROCESS
Applications are obtained at the Information Night and from our website after January 10, 2013 and must be completed and returned by January 25, 2013 at 3:00 p.m.
New applicants and those currently on our waiting list must attend a group tour of the school to be eligible for enrollment. A sign-up sheet will be available at Information Night to select a tour time. (Tours are for parents/guardians only; new students will have opportunities to meet teachers and classmates after placement.)
Lottery and waiting list placement notification will be mailed by February 13, 2013.
Once the first grade lottery drawing has occurred, applicants will retain their assigned place on the waiting list. As openings occur, they will be offered to the next applicant on the list. Those offered enrollment from our waiting list will be given a 24 hour timeframe to make their final decision. The waiting list will remain intact through fifth grade as long as the yearly mandatory requirements are met. If an applicant accepts a position at another choice school in LWSD, they must notify Explorer’s enrollment coordinator who will remove their name from the waiting list. New 2nd through 5th grade applicants will be determined from a lottery for each grade and added to the existing waiting list.
For families with twins and multiple siblings, each student must enter the lottery as an individual and each student will receive an individual lottery number. There is no guarantee that twin/multiple siblings will receive admittance into Explorer. However, due to the elementary sibling preference policy should one twin/multiple sibling be admitted via sibling preference or lottery into the 1st grade, the other twin/multiple sibling will also be accepted, provided there is space available, (i.e. provided that the first twin/multiple sibling did not receive the last spot via lottery).
APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS
· Families must reside in the Lake Washington School District boundaries.
· Applicants must turn 6 years old on or before August 31, 2013 to be eligible for the fall 2013 lottery.
· New applicants and those desiring to maintain a waiting list spot must attend a school tour.
· Completed applications can be mailed or dropped off to the Enrollment Coordinator, Explorer Community School, 7040 208th Ave. NE, Redmond, WA 98053. You may also scan and email your completed application to explorer-enroll@hotmail.com. Applications are due by January 25, 2013 at 3:00 p.m.
· Notification letters will be mailed by February 13, 2013.
· Enrollment must be accepted by February 25, 2013.
