ONLINE ART FUNDAMENTALS       SYLABUS 2008-2009

    COURSE INFORMATION

  • Some pre- and post- assessments, marked with*, must be done in person, at BEST day or evening classes.
  • Hands-on work must be hand-delivered and discussed with instructor at mutually agreed time.
  • Friday afternoons are good times to come for an actual Art class Per. 3 or 4, where you can get help with your work.
  • Assignments are posted and available on the BEST HS website under Fine Arts- Online Art

    All assignments for each .25 credit must be turned in and meet standards for Mastery.

  • Assignments may be improved until they meet criteria.
  • Communicating with instructor by email about any questions, concerns, or problems IS ENCOURAGED!!!
  • Alternative assignments may be arranged to take the place of work you have already done at BEST.
  • For creative work you really want to do, proposals must be submitted in writing, with a plan for getting the work done. After mutual agreement and signing of plan, including objectives to meet, you can proceed.

    .25 CREDIT EARNED AFTER STUDENT DEMONSTRATES MASTERY OF ASSIGNED WORK  --   Total 500 points

    1. Getting Started: survey of what programs, technology, and art supplies you have available 10pt

    ART ANALYSIS AND APPRECIATION: learning and applying art terms and concepts

    2. Reading the Credit Line: independent reading and completing learning activity worksheet 20pt

    3. Subject Matter in Art (PPT): personal written response to selected art using Visual Thinking Strategy 20pt

    4. Elements of Design (Formal properties): *Pretest 10pt

    5. Elements of Design Online slide show with structured note-taking  30pt

    6. What’s Art? Looking at and writing about artwork from different times and places 50pt

    7. Choose a Culture Project: show and tell about art from one time and place that interests you, using      

          beginning PowerPoint skills              50pt

    ART PRODUCTION AND SKILLS DEVELOPMENT: Some activities will be online, others may be on paper. If work cannot be turned in online, it can be turned in at BEST.

     

    8. Create a Digital Portfolio Project: create an online folder to store your art, with an introduction page combining               typestyles and elements of design           20pt.

    9. Elements of Design booklet: learning activities from ARTiculation website on each Element;

               Applying each Element in your own work (photographs) or artwork chosen from online     40pt.

    10. Drawing eyes: learn how and compare your work before and after instruction     30pt.

    11. Drawing hands: contour line drawing and beyond, plus handprints and fingerprint drawing     30pt.

    12. Hand and Eye project in media of choice: original artwork using hands and eyes   50pt.

    13. Project of your choice: What do you want to learn/do? Make a proposal.    40pt.

    TECHNICAL AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS FOR THIS COURSE

  • Access to a computer with Internet connection
  • Basic drawing software such as Draw or Paint, or actual art supplies (see below)
  • Basic photo editing/ imaging software (Photoshop is ideal if you can use it)
  • Microsoft Word and Microsoft PowerPoint (can be used at school)                                                                          
  • Maintaining a portfolio of your written and graphic work on your LWSD account desktop     
  • Submitting all work to instructor by email to my account (see top of page) or in person at scheduled check-in times or by appointment
  • Saving work is required so that you can use selected pieces or photographs of them in your self-led conference.  Assessment will be ongoing and your participation in the process will allow you to continue working on your work beyond mastery to “A” quality if you so choose.

    ART SUPPLIES FOR THOSE WANTING HANDS-ON ART EXPERIENCE

  • Digital camera, if you have one
  • Sketching pencils: “H” , “2B” ,  “4,5, or 6 B” and “2H” (H is hard, and is fainter and good for laying out drawings; B is soft and smears for shading) plus eraser
  • Large felt tip markers, 8 or 12 colors                $3-$10
  • Small felt tip markers or colored pencils, 8 or 12 colors $3- $10
  • Oil pastels, 12 colors $2- $5  Pentel, Sakura, Reeves are all good brands
  • Good quality sketch paper – 11”x 14” sketchbook that says it’s good for sketching, watercolor, pastels
  • New or recycled computer printer paper for sketching ideas
  • Old magazines, cards, calendars, newspapers for collage (we have some calendars you can take)
  • Glue or glue stick
