Monthly Math Challenge

 Dear Parents and Students,

I believe that mathematics is a very important subject and that math skills are critical for all our students. In order to promote math, I am going to continue with the monthly “Alcott Math Challenge.” Each month, I will post a variety of story problems on the Alcott website that span all levels. You can select one math problem that you think fits your grade and math ability. There is an answer sheet that you must use to submit your answer. Students who successfully complete the Math Challenge with the correct answer and a logical explanation will receive a certificate for the month and have their name listed in the Orca News Splash for the following month. Students who successfully complete 7 of the 8 challenges will receive a math medal at the end of the year.

You will use a math strategy called R-E-C. This strategy is very similar to the strategies that your teachers have you use in class to explain your answers. This process builds mathematical thinkers who not only know the basic facts, but can apply them in problem solving. Parents can assist by asking probing questions; see attached sheets for suggestions. Moms and Dads can write for the younger students, if needed, as it models how to solve the problem. The purpose of the Math Challenge is to create excitement about math.

R = RESTATE
In your own words, tell what question the problem is asking you to solve.

E = EXPLAIN
This is the step where you will show me your thinking so that I know how you solved the problem.  You can show your thinking with numbers, pictures AND/OR words.

C = CONCLUDE
This means that you will give the answer to the problem and include any appropriate labels with the answer. For example:  A frown takes 46 muscles; Apples are the best buy because they are 6 cents less a pound; there are 63 cars on the lot.

(due by Thursday, May 29th)

If you do not have computer access, you can look at the problems here at school or get a copy of them from the office. We are trying to save on paper, so I appreciate you using the web as a resource.

Happy problem solving!!  I look forward to encouraging our Alcott mathematicians.
