The Redmond Penguins/Special Olympics Swim Team needs your help!

If any families from the Alcott Community would like to donate goggles, bathing caps or speedo swim suits to the team, that would certainly be appreciated.  If you have a donation or questions, contact Pat Schmitt here at Alcott for more information.  Thank you.

 PENNIES FOR PEACE UPDATE

In the January 6th edition of the eNews, we highlighted the efforts of our 5th and 6th grade Quest classrooms who collected funds for Pennies for Peace, an organization that is bringing the gift of education and building schools in areas of Afghanistan and Pakistan.  Mrs. Hobbs and Mrs. Isaacson wanted to say ‘thank you’ to Microsoft who doubled their donation with a matching grant that brings their total to $1200.  In the words of Mrs. Isaacson, ‘Way cool!’

PTSA WINTER COAT DRIVE (In case you missed it the first time)

The Alcott PTSA wants to thank the Alcott community for making the PTSA Winter Clothing Drive a complete success!  At final count (coats arrived until the very last minute of school), there were more than 650 coats and over 1,100 total pieces of clothing.  The donation coordinator at the Seattle Gospel Mission said that they were "overwhelmed" by the school's generosity.  They have never had such a large donation before the one made by Alcott.  The bags were opened the day they arrived and coats were passed out immediately.  The clothing benefits abused women, low-income seniors, and homeless men, women and children throughout King County.  Mr. Crain's class was awarded the pizza party.  Well-done!  However, considering that the entire school made this drive such a success, every class will be awarded a popsicle party.  Bravo, Alcott!!!

EMAIL ISSUES

A number of folks have mentioned that they have not been receiving the eNews Brief.  I think that I have the kinks worked out and this is the first try using the new distribution list.  I have included the January 6th edition which contains associated content.  We also should have all eNews on the website as well.  In the event that you are not getting eNews updates or it seems like it has been awhile, please check the website and if you didn’t receive the latest edition, please contact the office.  Thank you.

NOT EASY TO SAY ‘GOODBYE’…

As you know, Jerie Broze, our office manager is moving to a new school—Rose Hill Elementary to re-join former Alcott principal, Karin Janick.  In the short time that I have been here at the school, I have quickly grown to love and appreciate Jerie for her humor, her dedication, her caring nature, and ability to make you feel special.  We have really had fun in our office the past few weeks, so I, like many folks here at the school are having a difficult time saying, ‘Goodbye’.

Officially, Jerie’s last day will be next Wednesday, January 13th and I am sure that if you have the chance to visit on that day, she would greatly appreciate it (she will be at Rose Hill on Monday and Tuesday).  Thank you, Jerie, for all you have done for the children, parents and staff at Alcott Elementary.

REFLECTIONS ART SHOW 2010-TONIGHT!

We have three award recipients this year: Erica Li, Hamsa Shankar (Visual Arts), and Luke Jianu (Photography) with two of these entries forwarded on to the State Reflections contest.  Congratulations to all of our students who participated in the Reflections program this year!

PENNIES FOR PEACE

The fifth and sixth grade Quest classes embarked upon a 2 week coin drive for the Pennies for Peace organization started by Greg Mortenson of Three Cups of Tea fame. The two classes collected over $650 dollars in coins over 9 days!  A mere $20.00 buys a primary student in Afghanistan or Pakistan school supplies for a year!  See his new website at: www.stonesintoschools.com for more information.

Many thanks to Mrs. Hobbs and Mrs. Isaacson for organizing the effort.  How nice it is to know that our school and students can make a difference in our local community with the highly successful coat/clothing drive, and impact the world by supporting education through Pennies for Peace. Great job!
