Dear Parents,

I would like to share with you some personnel changes in our office staff at Rose Hill Junior High starting next week.  Nancy James, Office Manager, has taken a new position as an Administrative Assistant at the Resource Center.  Nancy has been at Rose Hill Junior High for 17 years and we wish her all the best as she takes on a new challenge.  Jodi Pollett, currently in the Counseling Office, will take on the Office Manager duties.  We will be opening the Counseling Secretary position to applicants.  I would like to have a parent join our counseling staff as part of the interview committee.  Our PTSA board will choose a parent representative to help with these important interviews.  Please let one of our board members know of your interest.

Other newsworthy items for this week are as follows:

Why join PTSA? – I have included an RHJH PTSA membership form and a document entitled, “Why Join PTA?”.  To date we have 203 members (19 are staff members).  With 515 students at Rose Hill Junior High, we can do better!  Please consider taking the time to join this important parent organization.  You can bring the form to the Rose Hill Junior High main office, or contact any PTSA member.  Questions about PTSA?  Please contact me, jellis@lwsd.org, and I will forward your question to our PTSA board.

Math Club – Math club begins today (Tuesday, Oct. 9th)  If your student would like to play games, work on math problems, make new friends, attend math competitions, and eat snacks – then encourage him or her to sign up in Mrs. Folkman’s room.  Everyone is welcome.  If you have questions about Math Club, you may contact Mrs. Folkman, cfolkman@lwsd.org.

School Sweatshirts – We now have Rose Hill Junior High sweatshirts and t-shirts on sale.  The order form is enclosed.  Orders and checks (payable to Rose Hill Junior High) are due on October 17th.  You may contact Mrs. Cimburek, jcimburek@lwsd.org, for more information.

Bus Driver Shortage – Our school district is experiencing a severe shortage of drivers.  This may cause routes to be split when there are not enough drivers.  Splitting routes means that the time to transport students may take longer and that students may be spending more time at bus stops without parent supervision.  I will try and email our parent list when I am notified that a route has been split.  If you are interested in driving for the school district, you may apply online through the Lake Washington School District web-site, http://www.lwsd.org/Pages/default.aspx.

Magazine Drive – Today (Tuesday, Oct. 9th) is the final turn-in day for the magazine drive.  To those of you who have helped with this important fund-raiser, thank you!  This money goes to fund athletic buses and uniforms as well as all after-school Rose Hill Junior High Activities.

English Speaking Classes – Free classes for immigrants to practice their English language skills are on Tuesday evenings, 7:00 – 8:30 pm at Faith Lutheran Church.  You may contact Mrs. Higgins, our school counselor, jhiggins@lwsd.org, for more information.

Parent Access – This is the program that gets you access to WebGrader, the program where you get to view your student’s grades in each class.  Parent Access will also allow you to view his/her attendance, make credit card payments to school lunch accounts anytime day or night, and fill out volunteer applications online for LWSD schools!  There is a link on the district website explaining how parents can set up their Parent Access for WebGrader.  It's at http://www.lwsd.org/Parents/Pages/Parent-Portal-Registration-Instructions.aspx.   The webpage also has a link to the video that demonstrates how to access it.   You will not be able to complete the registration process if the email address you are trying to use is not the one we have on file for you here at the school office.  In addition, we have links to Parent Access login on our Rose Hill Junior High Website.  You can access our homepage with the following link: http://schools.lwsd.org/rhjh/.   Teachers will be updating their grade books every two weeks.  Mid-quarter report time is right now and this is the time you should be looking at your student’s grades.  You may contact me, jellis@lwsd.org, with any questions about Parent Access, and I will forward them to the appropriate helpdesk.

Veteran’s Day Assembly - Planning for this year’s Veteran’s Day assembly is well underway.  Please help us recognize the veterans of Rose Hill and Stella Schola by completing the attached survey and returning it with your student, or by emailing it to Jill Berge (jberge@lwsd.org).  Thank you in advance for helping us!

Math Night – I would like to invite you to attend our first Math night of this school year next Tuesday evening, October 16th.  Our PTSA meeting begins at 6:30 pm and our Math Night IS the program!  If you are interested in our Microsoft Math Grant, or just would like some information on how better to support your student in math, then this night is for you.  You may contact our Math Coach, Katie Folkman(cfolkman@lwsd.org) for more information about our Math night or our math program at Rose Hill Junior High.

Microsoft Math Grant Student Survey - As part of the Microsoft Math Partnership grant, Rose Hill Junior High students, who are in the 8th grade, are being asked to take an online student perception survey.  This 15 minute survey will take place during math classes on October 23rd.  No data on individual students will come from this survey.  The aggregate data will be used to plan meaningful staff development for the RHJH math department.  If you have questions or would like to see the survey, please contact me, jellis@lwsd.org.
