Seahawk Blitz joins the Muir Elementary Turkey Trot

It was all smiles and high fives at John Muir Elementary when the Seahawk Blitz joined students at the 17th Annual Turkey Trot. This event took place during lunch recesses and promotes the importance of physical fitness and activity.

This project was included on the Long-Term Facilities Task Force recommendations. Given the age and condition of the portables, the project includes replacing the portables rather than investing in upgrading portables that are near the end of their useful life.

Building Condition/Current Situation:
Explorer Community School is a choice school located on the Dickinson Elementary campus. It is housed in portables that are between 26 and 30 years old and rated in “Poor” condition based on the annual building evaluation done using the State Building Condition Assessment. This score is based on an annual building evaluation of multiple building systems and sub-systems conducted by a third party vendor.

Grand opening and ribbon cutting

Principal Karen Barker and LWSD Superintendent Dr. Traci Pierce cut the ceremonial ribbonLWSD held its grand opening celebration and ribbon-cutting for Explorer Community School on Wednesday, October 4, 2017. Principal Karen Barker and LWSD Superintendent Dr. Traci Pierce cut the ceremonial ribbon. Students performed for guests and Principal Barker recognized the teachers for their work in opening the new building. You can watch the Grand Opening Ceremony on the LWSD Facebook page.

In addition, the covered play area was completed the first weekend of October.

Explorer Community School groundbreaking

Students at Explorer Community School will have new portables and a newly designed campus to return to in the fall. The community participated in a ceremonial groundbreaking ceremony on June 20. The project is among those funded by a bond measure approved by voters in 2016.

Community input

Explorer Community School parents viewed site plans for the new Explorer at a meeting on December 13, 2016. This open-house style meeting gave parents an opportunity to view the preliminary designs for the new Explorer campus. Staff from the architecture firms working on the projects were available to answer questions and get feedback.
