Besides the traditional favorites like tetherball and four square, students at Dickinson Elementary School and Explorer Community School enjoyed another game at recess this past spring: chess.
With over 29,000 students and the teachers and other staff who serve them, Lake Washington School District manages over 40 different school and other buildings. An extensive operation behind the scenes keeps our school buildings in shape for learning to take place every day.
Keeping these buildings clean, safe and ready for learning takes a staff of custodians and tradespeople. Custodians are responsible for the day to day cleaning of buildings. They also work together in teams during the summer to do deep cleaning of our schools in preparation for the new school year.
Facilities management also includes extensive work that protects the community's investment in school buildings. The district replaces major systems, such as roofs or HVAC systems, on a life-cycle basis.
Other facets of facilities management include keeping students and staff safe. For example, we use integrated pest management, a broad-based approach that minimizes risks to people and the environment.
Facilities management also involves constructing new schools to meet our growing enrollment. Voter-approved bonds are needed to fund new schools. A 2016 bond measure funded a series of projects explained in the Building on Success section.
