Art Programs
Art Education Over the last several years, our school has been fortunate to have parents and volunteers who have been committed to bringing art and art education into the classroom. This strong level of support has enabled us to grow and develop a successful, and district recognized, Art Docent Program. This school year, especially, brings many exciting opportunities with the addition of an Art and Science Room. Art is an important component in a child's education and it is through class curriculum and volunteer Art Docent Programs that our children will continue to increase their knowledge of the EALR's (Essential Academic Learning Requirements) in the field of art. It is our philosophy that all Horace Mann's students be given the opportunity to explore art in two different ways: by Seeing Art and by Doing Art.
Seeing Art ? Slide Shows and the Junior League Northwest Art Collection Through a private donation last year, we were able to purchase several sets of slides which visually illustrate styles in art history (i.e. Impressionism) as well as applied art concepts (watercolor, 3D art etc.). Through this medium, the students will be able to view the art of the famous Masters. In the spring, Horace Mann will once again host the popular Northwest Art Collection; a small but significant number of works by well known Northwest artists. Each class will view the collection and learn about each piece while engaging in lively discussions about "what they see"!
Doing Art ? The Art Docent Program Students explore art through hands-on projects with different art mediums. These art sessions are lead by our volunteer parent Art Docents. With all kinds of resource materials for great projects (and many returning docents!) we have a wealth of project ideas and art concepts to share with the students. From watercolor to wire sculpting, and paper making to still life oil painting; the students at Horace Mann learn about ? and experience - a wide range of art mediums.
