Community Resource Persons and Guest Speakers

File: IICB-R

A teacher, teaching team, or student group wishing to secure the services of a guest speaker (resource person) shall secure approval of the principal. Approval is to be submitted to the principal prior to the extending of an invitation for the guest speaker's presentation.

Requests for persons to speak to a group of students or to show audio visual materials in a particular school of this district shall be referred to the principal of that school.

A guest speaker may be invited to address students and staff on a subject which is relevant to the goals of a specified educational activity and is not prohibited by law. An invitation to a guest speaker does not imply endorsement of the views expressed by him, and the district assumes no obligation to provide an audience for guest speakers.

A principal may authorize groups of students to hear a guest speaker if he/she has determined that the presentation is related to the educational program of the students and that the intellectual and emotional maturity level of the students has been considered.

The teacher, teaching team, or other staff person requesting the guest speaker must be present along with the students during the presentation so that clarification, interpretation, and the establishment of relationships to learning activities are possible as appropriate.

The Board of Directors and staff of the district are not required to take a stand either for or against the ideas presented by a guest speaker.
