Superintendent Message - September 2017

Welcome to 2017-18

Learning, Growing, Building #proud2bLWSD

Dr. Traci Pierce, SuperintendentWe are so excited to begin the 2017-18 school year!

Our teams have been working hard over the past several weeks to finalize preparations for the start of school. We look forward to welcoming all new and returning LWSD families and students.

As superintendent, I want to make sure you know our district commitment to student learning and our vision of Every Student Future Ready. When we say every student, we mean every single student. Lake Washington is proud to serve a diverse and growing community. We care about every single one of our students and are committed to their learning and success.

It takes the entire LWSD team – principals, custodians, bus drivers, teachers, office professionals, instructional assistants, para educators and district staff – working together to help students succeed. In the weeks leading up to the start of school, our teams receive training and engage in professional learning so we can best support our families and students. As professionals, we continue to learn so we can better help our students learn. We are proud to have caring and committed staff, and we are proud to be a high performing district where students learn and achieve at high levels.

When it comes to students, our enrollment is continuing to grow. While we won’t have our official count until October 1, we expect to grow from last year’s enrollment of 29,008 students to nearly 30,000 students.

Since we are growing we are excited to be building new schools to accommodate this growth. Last spring, we broke ground on two new elementary schools and a new middle school. We also broke ground on the rebuilding/enlarging of Juanita High School and the new modulars for Explorer Elementary. This summer, progress on all projects continued, and Explorer’s grand re-opening is set for late September.

Great communities make great schools. We very much appreciate our parents, community members, and city and business leaders for their support of our schools. It is through the passage of bond measures that we can build the schools and classrooms we need for our growing student population. The second of our four planned bond measures is scheduled for 2018, along with our four-year replacement levies. Look for more information on these measures to come soon.

Lake Washington is learning, growing and building on success. As our communities grow, our district grows, and as our district grows, so does our unwavering commitment to serving every one of our students.

We are proud to be LWSD!
