LAKE WASHINGTON SCHOOL DISTRICT INTERSCHOLASTIC ATHLETIC PHILOSOPHY Interscholastic athletics are an integral part of the total educational program. Participation in the interscholastic athletics is voluntary, and the individual is of prime importance. Participants should have varied sports opportunities commensurate with their interests and abilities, and they should have complete freedom of choice in selecting activities.
The coaches of athletic activities must assume a major role in the development of the youth in their charge. They should develop leaders, foster cooperation and personally model outstanding sportsmanship for emulation by students engaged in activities. They must insist upon ethical behavior and good citizenship.
While it is expected that coaches will strive for a "winning attitude." it is equally important that participants receive satisfaction from participating and not humiliation in losing. The primary aims for interscholastic athletics are the development of desirable traits in the individual, optimal participation and fulfillment of competitive desires. Winning should occur as an outgrowth of ethical coaching and competition.

| Essential Functions and Responsibilities: |
Must be able to motivate student athletics and maintain positive rapport with players and parents.
Must be organized in management of equipment, statistics and written record.
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Must meet and abide by LWSD policies and guidelines, (first aid, CPR, HIV, HBV, fingerprinting, Expectations for Employee Conduct class, references, orientation, and eligibility work form).
Must meet WIAA experience level coach’s standards and follow their rules and regulations.
Prior successful high school coaching experience.
Demonstrated cooperation with school administration in promoting the total athletic program.
Must be able to organize, supervise, coordinate, and evaluate practice sessions and activities.
Demonstrated proper sportsmanship responsibilities as a good role model for parents, students and fans.
Must be able to communicate and enforce training rules and athletic code.

| License Requirements: |
| Valid first aid, CPR and AED certifications are required. |
| Immigration Reform and Control Act Requirement |

| Background Check on Recommended Candidate |
| A reference check inquiry will also be made by Human Resources on recommended candidates. According to 1992 legislation ESHB 2518, all school employees with regularly scheduled unsupervised access to children are required to have a criminal background check, which includes fingerprints. |

| All district employees are required to attend HIV/HBV and Educators and Touching presentation or supply evidence of similar courses to Human Resources. |
