Multimedia and Presentations: A Guide for LWSD Students
There are three essential parts to every successful presentation

Any Presentation that Uses Multimedia Needs:

  • A Copyright and Fair Use Disclaimer on the opening slide or screen
  • URLs for images that were found online
  • One slide or screen at the end of your presentation that lists all of the images you used

The final screen or slide should...

  • list the images in the order that they were used.
  • include the date you found the image online (in MLA format) and the URL of the image.

Copyright and Fair Use
Here are some things to know about Copyright and Fair Use for presentations.

  • Because you are a student, you can use copyrighted material.
  • You have to follow certain guidelines when using copyrighted material.
  • You cannot post a presentation that contains copyrighted material online or let anyone else use it.
  • Web Images: You can use up to 10% or 15 images (whichever is less) from any one collective work (such as a web page or a book) in your presentation.
  • Music: You can include 10% or 30 seconds of a song (whichever is less) in your presentation.
  • Illustrations: You may use no more than 5 images by 1 artist.
  • Motion: You may put 10% or 3 minutes (whichever is less) of a copyrighted film into your presentation.

More information about Fair Use, including video and sound, can be found on the Copyright and Fair Use page.

Your Opening Slide or Screen
Your opening slide or screen needs the Copyright and Fair Use disclaimer statement, which you can copy and paste onto the first slide or screen of your presentation:

NOTICE: The following presentation contains copyrighted materials used under the Multimedia Guidelines and Fair Use exemptions of U.S. Copyright law. Further use is prohibited.

Your opening slide should look similar to this:

Your opening slide or screen should have the Copyright and Fair Use disclaimer statement on it.

Images
There are two important things to remember about the images used in your presentation:

  • Any image that you find online needs a citation.
  • Paste the URL of the image directly beneath it on your slide or screen.

Cite images by pasting the URL of the image directly underneath it on your slide.

Last Slide or Screen
Every presentation that uses multimedia needs one slide or screen at the end of the presentation that lists all of the images you used. Here is all you need to know to create that slide:

  • Your final slide or screen should list all the images you used,
in the order that you used them.
  • Follow MLA guidelines for creating your citation for your image.

List the images you used in the order that you used them, using MLA format.

Final Checklist
Before you turn in your presentation, make sure that you have completed each of these three very important steps:

  1. Your opening slide or screen has the Copyright and Fair Use Disclaimer
  2. Each image you found online includes the URL directly below the image
  3. Your final slide or screen has a list of all the images that you used, in the order that you used them, properly cited in MLA format
