Examples of citations for books, magazines and encyclopedias

Citations can be confusing depending on exactly what kind of work it is, how many authors there are and even whether or not the author is listed. Follow these examples for specific situations. Be sure to double-space all works cited or works consulted lists.

Book: One Author

Last Name, First Name. Title. Place: Publisher, Date.

Sheftel‐Gomes, Nasoan. Everything You Need to Know About
Racism. New York: Rosen Publishing Group, Inc., 1998.
Editor, Compiler instead of Author

Last Name, First Name, ed. Title. Place: Publisher, Date.

Mitchell, Hayley R., ed. The Death Penalty. San Diego:
Greenhaven Press, Inc., 2001.
Note: When listing multiple authors or editors, use the following examples:
Two authors:
Last Name, First Name, and First Name Last Name.
Three authors:
Last Name, First Name, First Name Last Name, and First Name Last Name.
Two editors:
Last Name, First Name, and First Name Last Name, eds.
Three editors:
Last Name, First Name, First Name Last Name, and First Name Last Name, eds.
Note: Use “et al” when more than 3 authors or editors are listed. Write the name of the first person listed, then a comma, then “et al” followed by a period (see example in the next citation). If editors, put “et al” followed by a comma, and then “eds.”
Encyclopedia: Author Listed
Last Name, First Name. “Article Title.” Encyclopedia Title.
Edition Date.
Matsuoka, Judy Chiyo, et al. “Blindness.” Encyclopedia
Americana. 1996.
Encyclopedia: No Author Listed

“Article Title.” Title. Edition Date.

Last name, First Name. “Article Title.” Newspaper Title Day
Month Year, Edition: SectionPage.
