Rose Hill Elementary is delighted to offer students a broad range of extension programs, during the school day:
Passport Program
This is an all school program, encouraging students to learn world geography. Every student in the school who wishes to can participate in learning countries, continents, oceans, seas, and capitals. Students will be quizzed once a month by volunteers. Every student will receive a map, and a passport booklet. The PTSA sponsors the Passport Program. Please contact Jen Mason at stevejenmason@hotmail.com
Peace Builder
Rose Hill Elementary is a PeaceBuilder™ school. PeaceBuilders is a program designed to help create an environment that reduces aggression and establishes a more peaceful way of living in our school and community. Peaceful behavior becomes an integral part of everyone’s life – students, staff, teachers and parents. Each Monday, all students recite the PeaceBuilder pledge:
I am a PeaceBuilder
I pledge to praise people
To give up put-downs
To seek wise people
To notice and speak up about hurts I have caused
To right wrongs
To help others
I will build peace at home, at school
And in my community each day.
Big Brothers & Sisters
The Big Brothers & Big Sisters program is just getting started at Rose Hill Elementary this year. It provides opportunities for students to make life-long connections with adult mentors from the local community.
Lunch Buddy
This program is for students K-6. It pairs an adult volunteer with a student for one hour per week during the lunch and recess time. The Lunch Buddy Program also brings another caring person into the life of a child and offers children the opportunity to have adult friends.
Reading with Rover
Reading with Rover is a canine-assisted, pro-literacy program that helps kids discover the joy of reading. This wonderful program works on the simple premise that a child is far more likely to want to read when they know that their audience is unconditionally loving and non-judgmental. Every Tuesday, the Rose Hill 2nd grade kids are treated to a reading-filled, tail-wagging good time! Rose Hill Elementary is honored and doggone proud to be the only “Reading with Rover” school in the Lake Washington School District! The contact for this program, is Brian Daly bdaly@lwsd.org.
Pacific Northwest Ballet
All second grade students participate in a DISCOVER DANCE Partnership Residence with Pacific Northwest Ballet every Friday for 45 minutes. During this residency, students will learn dance vocabulary and choreographic concepts which will progress into a dance that will be performed on stage at PNB’s McCaw Hall. Each class will be using the 2nd grade Balance and Motion science unit as inspiration for their dance classes and final choreography.
“First Move” Chess Club
Second and third graders at Rose Hill participate in the “First Move” Chess Program. This program involves an hour-long lesson, during class, once each week. Students learn about the chess board itself and the chess board coordinates; about each piece and the way it moves (using fun games that are specific to each piece); and strategy for game play. By the end of the year, students have mastered countless concepts such as coordinate use, reasoning, and problem-solving…all the while learning to become logical chess players! Intermediate Intramural Sports
This is a flag football and softball sports program, run over the lunch recess three to four days a week depending on weather conditions. It is open to all students, grades 4-6. For more information, please contact Dave Warnick at dwarnick@lwsd.org.
